A family friend reports Karen Ann Quinlan has rallied and stabilized in her latest near death episode. The friend, who asked for anonymity, called her condition unpredictable but not imminent death.
Rioting blacks attacked a police vehicle in Soweto when riot police opened fire killing one rioter and wounding another, according to a high police official in Johannesburg.
The Justice Department antitrust division backed TWA’s proposal to cut coach fares from $156 to $99, enabling new Super Coach flights starting July 6. TWA would remodel 707 jets for more passengers and reduce daily flights from five to two. American Airlines and various travel agencies argued the price cut would force losses and steal business.
Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. appoints Claire Dedrick, 46, resources secretary and Sierra Club alumna, to the California Public Utilities Commission. She replaces Leonard Ross who resigned to join the state department. Term runs until Jan. 1, 1981.
Police recovered the body of wealthy kidnapping victim Javier Ybarra Berge in a Basque mountain after his family refused a 15 million dollar ransom. A communique from the kidnapers led to the discovery. Basque autonomy party leaders distancing themselves from the act.
A 36-year-old Newport Beach man remained in critical condition after a homemade single engine Cassatt Sport crashed near Corona Municipal Airport yesterday afternoon. Pilot Anthony Dorsett was severely injured when the craft apparently lost power after two 90 degree turns and struck a hill, the FAA investigating possible overcontrol and stability issues while noting the plane had only three weeks of ownership.
Senate supporters fell one vote short of a two thirds margin to override Gov. Brown’s veto on SB155. Lead author Sen. George Deukmejian sought the 27th vote from absent Sen. Alex Garcia as debate noted Californians' 1972 ballot support. Briggs abstained, arguing against the veto as an act of conscience.
Frank Emerson, 69, longtime Corona postmaster for 41 years, died early today at Huntington Memorial Hospital Pasadena after a cancer battle. He retired in 1975 after guiding postal operations since 1934 and was active in civic and Democratic affairs. He survived by his wife Rosemary a son and other relatives. He was previously injured in a recent automobile accident en route to treatment.

County Assessor Frank Seeley announced that Riverside County property owners may file for hearings with the Assessment Appeals Boards from July 5 to August 26. Applications available at the Riverside Clerk’s office and the Corona assessor’s office after July 1, with pamphlets at 14th floor Appeals Board. Seeley urged owners to consult local assessor branches for appraisal basis and to contact the proper office promptly.
