President Ford authorized creation of the President Ford Committee to raise funds for his 1976 bid. Dean Burch filed organization papers with the Federal Election Commission at 11 35 a m serving as temporary chairman.
A 29 year old inmate, Jess Joe Valenzuela, was killed during outdoor exercise at the California Institution for Men when he was stabbed 19 times by another inmate. He died about twenty minutes after arrival at the prison hospital.
Three sizable earthquakes, the largest 4.2, and 14 smaller tremors struck the Southern California desert community. A Caltech Seismology Lab spokesman said the quakes form a swarm that has persisted for days and was weakening, unlikely to equal a prior swarm that produced over 1,000 quakes earlier this year.
The Dow Jones rose 8.76 points to 854.11 before noon as trading picked up. The market showed advances over declines by about 3 to 1 among 1,662 issues with roughly 12.4 million shares traded in the two hour period, signaling a rebound in prices.
Attorney General Levi praised President Ford's proposals to Congress including mandatory prison terms for hard core offenders, higher fines up to 50000, prison upgrades, stricter gun control and a crackdown on organized crime. Levi said the plan will work and reduce crime rates while noting some judicial discretion for major crimes.
Elvis Presley spent two days at Mid-South Hospital in Memphis for an extensive eye examination. Dr. George Nichopoulos said the hospitalization had no serious implications.
Constantine Tsatsos, former university professor and politician, was elected by Parliament to a five year term as Greece’s first president under the new constitution. He headed the draft commission and was endorsed by premier A Laneesew ase wecsneanslhd. Members of the New Democratic party cheered as he took the oath.
Pacific Telephone Co. plans to eliminate about 1000 jobs and reduce its 1975 building program by 25 million dollars. The company warned the cutbacks may risk a negative impact on service.
Reports from diplomats in Peking and high level visitors to China say the physical condition of Communist party Chairman Mao Tse-tung has deteriorated considerably in recent months.
The May cost of living rose 0.4 percent while gasoline averaged 55 to 59 cents a gallon. CPI was 9.5 percent above a year earlier, with a 0.5 percent inflation rate over the last three months. Other index movers included used cars and meats, with declines in sugar cereals dairy and fats.
Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin told Ma'ariv that Israel will keep the Golan Heights, key Sinai positions, and a West Bank presence in any peace agreement. He says the ideas may not be accepted by the U.S. administration and favors an interim accord with Egypt. In Beirut, Syria reportedly has a new generation of Soviet weapons, and Syrian Foreign Minister Khaddam meets Ford and Kissinger in Washington amid U.S. reassessment of Middle East policy.
Federal Energy Administrator Frank Zarb said Americans should have enough gasoline this summer and warned reports of shortages could trigger panic buying. He downplayed price spikes and noted refinery use is at 80 to 85 percent while crude stocks rise, with an FEA team investigating the cause.
A fast moving grass fire west of Corona drew the Corona Fire Department and the State Division of Forestry into action. Corona sent two units while Forestry dispatched five engines and two administrative cars. Forestry units remained on site about four hours on the north side of Riverside Freeway near Norco.
Mrs Mary C Lencioni age 81 of 915 Washburn Street died at home. Born in 1894 in Italy she immigrated to this city in 1923. She is survived by three daughters Norma Muratore Emma Bennetti and Lena Cena all Corona six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Tom Gunderson expressed gratitude after being named to succeed George Murphy on the Corona City Council. He noted the council faced a tough choice among capable candidates, including Wayne Keith of Alcoa, and said he looks forward to collaborating with the four existing members and contributing to city government.
Sam Giancana, reputed Chicago crime boss linked to CIA plot rumors, was killed in a basement shooting at his Oak Park residence. Police found him with multiple gunshot wounds to the face and throat. no weapon or signs of a break-in were reported.
