Fire breaks out again south of Lake Mathews

A new blaze near Lake Mathews Gavilan Hills forced evacuations of about 50 ranch families and threatened thousands of livestock. Fire crews fought the Dawson Canyon Gavilan Hills fire as winds surged, burning 1500 acres, with a house lost and one firefighter hospitalized. Authorities detained two youths on suspicion of starting the Lee Lake fire. a Corona newspaper photographer reported the origin point.

Canyon Highway Hearing Not on Corona Routing

Public meeting at Alderhill Elementary on the Temescal Canyon routing focused only on the segment to Corona East Limits. District Engineer Kane noted the Temescal option leaves alternative routes open for extending the freeway toward Riverside Highway 18 and U.S. 91, with a July Corona meeting planned to present studies.

Man Relieved When Caught on License Charge

A man defrauded the state by placing reflective red tape on a 1956 license plate and was arrested by Corona officers. Harry F. Young faced charges of false evidence of vehicle registration after admitting guilt in Justice Court. He had bought the car from a Long Beach dealer in 1955 and had not made payments since. He appeared relieved to be stopped, ending a year and a half on the run. Young will be bound over to Superior Court for Riverside County trial.

Summer School in Full Swing at Corona High School

Summer session is underway at Corona High School with 230 students enrolled in courses including world history U S history American problems typing and basic arithmetic. Classes run 8 a.m. to 12 10 p.m. for two or four hours daily and elementary sessions begin Monday at Jefferson School with bus pickup district wide.

U S Proposes Reducing Armed Forces in World Disarmament Effort

The United States and Soviet forces would be cut to 2.5 million each within a year of a disarmament treaty signing. Harold E. Stassen announced the plan at the London Disarmament Conference as a first step toward broader nuclear test talks. Also noted are honors for Navy graduates and a murder case proceeding in another court action.

Cooling trend continues in Southern California weather

A western California cooling trend lowers temperatures seven to twelve degrees from Wednesday. Desert regions are cooler, Friday looks slightly cooler with clear skies aside from night and morning coastal fog. Strong gusty winds expected in northern interior areas and likely spreading to Imperial and Coachella valleys Friday. Saturday forecasts fair weather with little temperature change.

Dr and Mrs Herman Ranch Home Saved From Fire

A massive forest blaze in Temescal Canyon threatening the Hermans ranch near Glen Ivy Hot Springs was halted by California Division of Forestry crews. Bulldozers and night watches kept the line, with crews working two days to create a fire break around Monument Peak and protect the Corona Hospital owners.
