At Hill Crest colliery in Lethbridge Alberta rescuers recovered twenty bodies after an explosion that left 200 miners entombed. Of 660 workers underground 350 escaped and 95 bodies were later recovered as hope waned for saving the remaining 200.
The so called dynamite race, a brutal desert sport, led to three cruelty charges after burros tethered with dynamite tails were sent off and exploded. Victims were injured. three men Marvin Charles, Henry Bennett and Horace Southerd were released on bail awaiting hearings in Justice Pittman's court.
Bakersfield reports the S P Valley line will be out for at least two days due to washouts from last nights cloudburst at Woodford. Tehachapi pass remains blocked with five feet of debris blocking five hundred feet of track, disrupting traffic between Bakersfield and Los Angeles.
