Corona High School held a brief commencement as 480 seniors received diplomas from Principal Earl Vaughn and Dr Austin Mason. A pre arranged fireworks display concluded with a fiery sign reading Spirit of 76 while students offered a noontime forecast of 85 degrees after an 53 degree overnight low.
The Corona Public Library will discontinue Sunday service after a 12 week trial. Trustees cite staffing costs totaling 1100 dollars against an average 32 patrons per Sunday and plan a review at the August 12 meeting.
A sea of blue caps and gowns filled Norco High School stadium as about 340 seniors graduated. Valedictorian Lisa Anderson urged classmates to pursue their own paths, while Linda Gubbino warned against setting goals too high. Salutatorian Melody Rossi urged looking forward yet reflecting on school days, and Gary Anderson stressed constitutional rights amid bicentennial talk. Firecrackers drew sheriffs’ eyes, a fountain sparked under a graduate, and Principal Jim Troxel urged safety before diplomas were awarded. the band performed, and graduates then headed to Disneyland.
Corona council approves 22.83 annual fee on restaurants for posting health ratings, after debate over who should pay. Councilman Calvert abstained. earlier talks of eliminating posting were halted by public and health department protests. County officials say postings promote higher standards and lower violations.
Former Norco city manager Si Melendez receives Riverside Redevelopment Agency approval to develop Eastside parcels. Agency sells three lots for 7 000 dollars with a 150 day option on 20 more parcels costing 45 000 to 50 000 each. He aims to build duplexes on large lots and single family homes on smaller ones.
