B52 Bombers Strike Jungle in South Viet Nam Probe

Twenty seven B52 eight-jet bombers from Guam dropped about eight hundred tons of bombs on a jungle patch north of Saigon. One Viet Cong body found. two B52s lost at sea with four crew dead and seven missing. Two American fatalities in ground fighting reported elsewhere as U S and South Vietnamese forces escalate. Earthquakes Hit Imperial County Area in Desert Shocks

The Titan 3C booster lifted a 21,000 pound payload into orbit at Cape Kennedy in a spectacular debut. The two solid rockets provided immense power as the giant rocket roared skyward and reached orbit twelve minutes after launch.

Riverside County Wins Anti Poverty War Grant

Congressman John W. Tunney announced Riverside County will receive 180 520 from the federal government for a neighborhood youth corps project costing 209 744 to provide work experience for 300 out of school youths as part of the anti poverty program. The project aims to keep youths busy and off the streets to curb juvenile delinquency and strengthen the economy.

LBJ Forecasts $2.5 Billion Improvement in Deficit

President Johnson told reporters that the budget deficit for the year ending June 30 will shrink to about 3.8 billion dollars, down 2.5 billion from January estimates, as revenues rise and spending falls. He noted 15 major cities dropped from 6 percent unemployment lists, leaving 22 centers above the mark, the lowest in eight years.

Defense Secretary McNamara announced the merger of the 2nd Infantry with the 11th Air Assault Division to form the airborne capable Airmobile unit. The 15,787-man force, with 428 helicopters, aims for combat readiness in about eight weeks and will cost about 1.1 billion dollars over five years.

U S paratroopers held by Dominican rebels to be released

Dominican rebels are expected to release two U S paratroopers, Pfc Larry R. Lee of Conestoga Pennsylvania and Sp4 Donald Jones of Pomona, seized when their jeep with a water trailer accidentally entered rebel territory during a routine supply route. The capture is not linked to the nearby fighting in which U S forces seized 40 blocks from rebels.

Ex Panther Johnston Wins RCC Crawford Award

Dan Johnston former Co rona football and track star and son of Mr and Mrs D S Johnston of 917 E Grand Blvd was named winner of the Jack Crawford Award at Riverside City College. The award honors a student athlete with sportsmanship academics and leadership. Johnston captained the 1964 City College team and held AMS posts while earning wrestling and track honors and all Tri County League football recognition. He plans to transfer to UCLA or USC.

Astros Gemini Four Aboard Flight to Paris Air Show

American astronauts Lt. Col. James A. McDivitt and Lt. Col. Edward H. White, accompanied by Vice President Hubert Humphrey, arrived at Le Bourget Airport for the Paris International Air Show. They flew President Johnson's jet from Andrews AFB, a six and a half hour trip.

Excise tax cut to reach consumers soon

President Johnson said the $4.7 billion federal excise tax reduction will begin flowing to consumers, producers and retailers on Tuesday. He did not specify the signing time but indicated the reductions take effect 24 hours after he signs the measure, suggesting a Monday signing.
