Desert heat ends life of Oakland salesman near Blythe

In brief notes from June to July 1943 era, Carl Brownell Jr. was found dead 25 miles west of Blythe after a trip on the Niland route amid desert heat reaching 122 degrees. Forester to Speak at Corona Garden Club Meeting

Fred Varney, protective assistant in the Palomar district of Cleveland National Forest, will be guest speaker at Corona Civic Garden Club at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist church. A potluck dinner will precede the talk on plants in local forests, followed by a two reel film Life of Plants. Mrs. John P. Key will preside at the meeting.

Woman Injured In Norco Car Collision Details

Miss Ruth Harmon of Columbia Missouri suffered a fractured left elbow and facial injuries when the car she rode in with sister Mrs Jack N Donohew collided with Mrs Viola Gibbs car at Fifth and Corona Norco. Mrs Donohew drove into a ditch to avoid the Gibbs vehicle. Alfred Gibbs age six had head cuts and bruises. Mrs Gibbs uninjured. Harmon hospitalized in Riverside for about a month. A second weekend crash near Cajalco dam left Edward Byrd with a severe scalp wound. condition listed as fair.

Ickes Forms Defense Resources Committee

A minor quake struck Honolulu at midnight lasting about 15 seconds with no damage reported. A second tremor followed at 12 06 am. Hilo also felt the quake strongly but no damage was reported. It may have centered deep beneath Mauna Loa, active for months.

Fourteen Army Flyers Die in Queens Midair Crash

Police report fourteen United States Army flyers killed when two Douglas bombers collided in mid air over Bellrose Manor Queens. One plane hit a residence causing a blaze near a public school while debris sparked additional flames and a resident was severely injured. Col. Douglas B. Stolen Car Found on Cajalco Road

A car stolen last Thursday from Fifth and Main streets belonging to A. W. McKiernan of 1007 Sheridan Street was recovered Saturday night on Cajalco Road and found stripped of accessories. Deputies also investigate another vehicle abandoned or wrecked in the same area and later hauled away by truck on Sunday.
