At Chu Lai a Marine platoon of 18 with two medics repelled repeated assaults by 400 Communist troops. With dwindling ammo they fought hand to hand using bayonets and rocks until reinforcements arrived at dawn. The enemy fled after leaving 40 dead.

Titan 3C launch aims to orbit eight satellites today

At Cape Kennedy an Air Force Titan 3C super rocket stood ready for a 10 a.m. EDT blastoff to orbit eight satellites and a research moonlet. The 700-ton vehicle, in its fourth test flight, will deploy seven 100-pound relay stations to form a spaceborne communications network linking distant forces with Washington.

Dope raid nets 16 in Corona area sweep

A three month planned joint operation by Corona Riverside and county sheriff’s deputies arrested 16 men in Corona and 33 countywide on narcotics charges. The raid started at midnight and ran until 5 a.m. with over 80 officers involved. Several suspects face sale or possession charges for heroin and marijuana, with multiple defendants named and in different jails.

Coed editor ordered to stand trial over sources

Annette Buchanan 20, managing editor of the Daily Emerald at the University of Oregon, faces a six month jail term and a $300 fine if convicted of contempt for refusing to name sources in a May 24 marijuana story. CRC clerk booked on dope count

Marilyn Eva Thompson a 26 year old clerk typist at California Rehabilitation Center was arrested on marijuana possession Riverside police said. She visited a neighbor at 2 am and told there was someone smoking marijuana. Police found a partly smoked cigarette seeds and debris in her apartment.

Viet war casualties rise amid Central Highlands fighting

American and Vietnamese casualties surged in the week ending June 11 as heavy combat in the Central Highlands involved the 101st Airborne. U.S. losses reached 142 killed and 741 wounded, while South Vietnamese totals were 151 killed and 328 wounded. Communist deaths climbed to 1,240.
