Walter Walkley Elected Associate Patron of Star Chapter

Walter W Walkley was elected associate patron of Crown Chapter Order of Eastern Star at last evening’s meeting in the oni hall He succeeds John Lufkin who moved to Long Beach and quit his duties Ritualistic services were by Mrs George E McCauley worthy matron and Fred Sthaat worthy patron The program featured vocal solos by Mildred Nelson and Mason Thompson with piano by Lusa Mae Hopkins Refreshments were served by Mrs Jessie Chaney and committee Attendees included Mrs Genita Ward and guests from Riverside and Los Angeles Crown Chapter officers planned next week’s service with Leona Hall Susie Huckins and others The U S W V auxiliary meets June 17 at Mrs Mamie Si als home 613 Howard street The Guild of St Episcopal church holds Wednesday noon meeting at 2 30 oclock concluding with refreshments

Well Baby Clinic Scheduled for Wednesday

The Well Baby Clinic will be held Wednesday at the Woman's Improvement clubhouse. Hours are 9 to 12 and 1 to 3. No July clinic. Mothers are asked to bring their babies. Mrs. Claire Buller and Mrs. Jesse McCarty assist Mrs. Dr Van Cleve.

Rubidoux White Shrine Meeting March Riverside

Rubidoux White Shrine of Jerusalem meets Wednesday in Riverside with a 6:30 chicken dinner followed by the regular session. Mrs Kerby Moore presides as worthy high priestess and Fred Gonzales as watchman. About 25 attendees expected and Corona visitors plan to join. Royal Neighbors families host picnic at city park Thursday at 6:30 with basket suppers and park amusements for all.

Loyalty Supper at First Methodist Wednesday

The First Methodist church hosts its monthly Loyalty social with a potluck supper at 6 45 p m. speaker Lawrence G Thome the attendance and welfare officer will discuss The Youth Problem in Corona. Attendees are asked to bring their own table service bread and butter. Lt Ralph Garton recently visited home before returning to his Salinas base and Lt Bob Wal has call on Pay Sittle one ring the service ten months ago.

Norco Honors Sixth Graders Entering Junior High

A Norco school assembly saluted sixth graders who will enter Corona junior high next fall. Awards were given by American Legion members for top posters, essays, and piano selections. Farewell remarks honored Miss Evelyn Searls as she leaves for service after three years teaching.

Mrs Merquelin Heads Norco Episcopal Guild Again

Mrs Helen Merquelin was reelected president of the Norco Episcopal Guild at the regular meeting. Mrs G Warell was elected secretary and Miss Molly Melhorn treasurer. An all day meeting featured a potluck luncheon and an afternoon sewing session. Miss Molly Jo Warrell of Los Angeles will stay two weeks with her parents Mr and Mrs C S Warrell.

Siases Welcome Evelyn Violet Born in Gardena

Mr and Mrs William Sias welcomed a daughter Evelyn Violet born May 26 at Bon Air hospital Gardena. The baby weighed six pounds fourteen ounces. The mother is Margaret Dennis, daughter of Clara Terry of 103 Southwest Grand Blvd. The family lives at Meadow Park Dairy Gardena and has a two year old daughter Katherine Eleanor.

Penestrian Hit By Car Says He Was Not Hurt

Police reported W. P. Bruiner struck by a car driven by Mrs. Virginia Covington of Battle Creek as he crossed Sixth and Main. Bruiner, from a local rooming house, said he felt no injuries. Also noted are Mrs. C. W. Wilson and Harriet Kay heading to Laguna Beach and Norco Girl Scout Troop 10 meeting with Ensigns Rogehler and Anderson.

National parks to open with curtailed services this year

The Department of the Interior announced that 168 national parks will open this year with reduced services in many western states. Grand Canyon and Yosemite offer select bus routes. Death Valley has a gas station at Furnace Creek but few facilities. Kings Canyon and Sequoia show limited or no concessions. Yellowstone and Glacier report limited services and no bus or hotel offerings.

Mr and Mrs Martin Keinrath received a letter and photos from a friend in Australia about their son Carl who has been stationed there for a year and has now moved to New Guinea. The letter expressed pleasure at hearing about the States and American joking, and the pictures were very nice.

Labor battalions urged to reform zoot suitors

San Francisco report says Board of Equalization member George R. Reilly proposed placing zoot suit youths in labor battalions under army sergeants. He noted many in Los Angeles skidrow were rejected by the armed forces for criminal records and urged redirecting them from streets to work to protect soldiers and sailors on leave.

The Kiska volcano in Alaska showed signs of eruption with sulfur plumes and lava spills. Reports say smoke and lava were observed during bombing missions on June 6 and 7, marking a first this generation for Alaskans.

Immunity from influenza virus shown in naval study

Commander Albert P. Krueger of the University of California reported at the Naval laboratory that influenza virus is airborne and can enter nose and throat. In experiments with mice, breathing the virus serum for 20 minutes yielded complete immunity against a lethal dose, while 40 percent protection came from 100 lethal doses, using horse serum-derived anti sera.

Housewives and children urged to aid in food production

Attorney General Robert W. Kenny urged housewives and children to help harvest and can fruits and vegetables this season. He said California must mobilize housewives, schools, students and white collar workers to stockpile food for fighting men, especially during August and September when processing peaks. He called cannery and plant conservation a critical war necessity.

Labor accused of trying to crucify U S agriculture

Washington dispatch reports Charles W. Holman secretary of the National Cooperative Milk Producers Federation accuses organized labor of seeking to crucify American agriculture with a secret price rollback program for food. He claims labor has gained wages well above cost of living and warns a New Deal backed policy could raise taxes and public payrolls to enforce ineffective jobs.

Speeder's Trial Held By Correspondence

Pueblo Colorado Justice of the Peace S A Bates says he established a legal precedent. Samuel Singer was arrested for speeding and asked for a trial by correspondence to cover gasoline for a trip. Bates asked for a guilty plea and Singer acknowledged by mail. Singer paid $8 by mail for a total $8 fine and costs.
