Sacramento Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. said he would veto legislation that would grant statewide elected officers pay increases of up to $20,000 annually.
Federal state and local law enforcement announced the breakup of a 100 million heroin trafficking ring operating from a distribution center in Utah. The crackdown disrupted shipments to nine states and involved multiple agencies.

Janice Gray, 26, a California Highway Patrol officer for about three years, shot and killed a man who wrested a gun from a fellow officer and seemed ready to shoot. A 19-year-old Corona resident Vincent Idle IT nearly drowned at the Corona City Park pool during an end of year party. Paramedics and police performed 45 minutes of CPR before he was rushed to Riverside County General Hospital. He had epilepsy and was unconscious after rescue.
