Interviews with students reveal mixed summer activity. Bill Rice rested and plans beach surfing. Ronny Knarr swam at Glen Ivy Hot Springs with family. Dennis Magley did nothing, drove all day. Howard Lennox swam at home with friends.
Lawrence Jenkins describes swimming with his friend Hike Higginson at the pool near 1025 West Citron. They swam for about an hour and a half, noting the length of time and the casual outing.
Astronauts James McDivitt and Edward White received a warm welcome in Chicago as civil rights groups called off protests. Miles of cheering residents lined the route, praising the spaceflight milestones amid a tense civil rights backdrop.
Vice President Hubert Humphrey told foreign students he doubted a majority abroad opposed U.S. policy in Vietnam and that American public opinion supported the Johnson administration. He spoke after greeting Gemini astronauts Frank Borman? McDivitt in Chicago amid campus and civil rights demonstrations. He highlighted Chicago roots of McDivitt and praised the astronauts as great Americans.
In a Sunday night interview Barry Goldwater, the 1964 Republican nominee, advised President Johnson to stop acting as commander and let the military determine tactics in Vietnam. He warned Hanoi could be bombed if they do not concede and suggested striking China’s nuclear capability only if provoked, while cautioning against a broad use of nuclear arms. He also said Reds should be warned and that China’s limited atomic capacity might be destroyed if provocation occurs.
Forecasters predict mostly sunny skies with variable high clouds today and Tuesday. Winds remain strong and gusty with slightly cooler daytime highs. At noon the temperature reached 72 degrees. last night’s low was 55 degrees. Yesterdays high hit 76.
Robert Washington, the first Negro teacher hired by Corona Unified School District, leaves after three and a half years. He commuted from Pasadena Riverside or San Bernardino about 40 000 miles. He cites housing discrimination and says he will raise his children in a neighborhood where they can reach their full potential. He notes some school officials offered help, but he grew discouraged and left for San Bernardino.
A battalion of U S paratroopers assembled about 20 miles south of Dong Xoai forming an offensive position for the first time in the Vietnam War. The move followed Viet Nam government requests and a new military leadership committee led by Maj Gen Nguyen Van Thieu. Casualties mount as five days of fighting yield about 2000 dead or wounded on both sides with 225 guerrillas killed west of Dong Xoai and seven Americans killed with 11 missing nationwide.
Senator Richard B. Russell told the Georgia Association of Broadcasters at Pine Mountain that Vietnam is entering its most dangerous stage. He warned of possible foreign intervention by Russia and China and compared the conflict to Korea due to logistical issues and internal instability. Russell received a Bronze plaque naming him Georgian of the Year.
State troopers moved into position at the Mississippi Capitol in Jackson surrounding the building and grounds as a precaution for planned mass picketing by the Freedom Democratic party. The equipment and presence aimed to deter visitors during a special legislative session to review voting law changes. A notice on the House Gallery entry barred visitors without written permission.
A pet ocelot linked to Sal Mineo and 10 others tested free of rabies after autopsy. The animal died following the incident at its owner William Belasco’s home, allowing victims to skip antirabies treatment.
