Corona Hardware leads the City League and hosts the CYO team at 8 p.m. tonight at City Park. Home and visiting teams split field time 7 to 7 50 and 7 30 to game time per new policy. Wayne Taylor notes a forthcoming official home team schedule. Standings in the City League follow.
Corona defeated Elsinore five to two at Tops Cafe. Early leaders Art Smith and Les Harris, Sr. beat Howard Brock and Roy Phillips 21-10, then Pergin and Stanley topped Gene and Edna Scott 21-14. Jordan and Jones won 21-10 to swing back, followed by Woody and Rinetti 21-8. Brunke and Patterson won 21-12, Cartmill and Hutson took 21-13, and Hill and Chance finished 21-20 for Corona's decisive win.
Eugene Michaels drove in Jim Ragsdale with a ninth inning single to lift the Mava Ice Cream nine to a 5 3 win over league leading L A Brick. Ragsdale pitched a masterful nine innings allowing 10 hits and three runs as Contreras provided the tying and Michaels the game winner.
The Corona High School gym will be open daily from 1 to 5 p.m. for all ages to enjoy tennis softball touch football basketball badminton ping pong boxing tumbling and more. Badminton classes run Tuesday nights 7 to 10 p.m. boxing classes start Thursday. semi finals are July 29 and finals August 5.
In a tense game the Mava Panthers erased a 2-2 tie in the ninth as Claude Ragsdale opened on error and Eugene Michaels drove in two with a single. Eddie Contreras added an RBI hit, guiding a 5-3 lead before final rally from L A Brick. Chip Rodriguez and Jim Ragsdale each had three hits in four at bats.
Two Moreno horses Pohante Jingles and Ben Cheese captured first place in quarterhorse races Sunday at Los Alamitos track in Long Beach. Eddie Moreno earned the title of top quarterhorse trainer and jockey in California after winning five of seven races he entered.
Percy Jerome Cuff of Santa Ana was sentenced to pay a $25 fine for violating basic speed laws after an March 4 accident. He failed to appear to answer the complaint and began serving one day for every two in county jail. The incident occurred when his car overturned in a storm drain at Citrus and Cleveland in the Mira Loma district.
The Corona Rockets beat the Beaumont Night Hawks 3 to 2 in Beaumont field. Dassie Neal pitched shutout until the eighth, Ernie Bryant hit a decisive home run, while Jack Nicholson and Junior Baskins added triples. Rockets belong to Twin County Softball League. next game in Corona on Friday June 17.
CHS alumni gathered for a tenth reunion with in person attendees in Corona and letters from former classmates across the country. Messages arrived from Betty Agins Hoffman in New York and others in California Texas Oregon and Washington. A telegram also came from Barbara Clayton of Santa Barbara.
Hershel Rutland of 4193 Mariposin Avenue Arlington was found guilty of disturbing the peace in a Justice Court trial. A battery charge against him was dismissed. The misconduct alleged by his wife Beulah occurred at their home on June 2. Rutland awaits sentencing before Justice George J. McCauley tomorrow.
Corona school trustees face a proposed increase of 350 per teacher or 250 over current pay with total costs rising to 447 700 if state aid bills pass. Superintendent Kibby urges salary alignment with neighboring districts while trustees wait on legislative decisions and may invite budget experts to present at next meeting.
The Temesval District Court of Honor in Riverside County held an awards night at the North American Legion hall with Duane Olinger as chairman and Charles V. Key as clerk. Troop 38 performed, and Second Class, First Class, and Merit Badges were awarded to named Scouts. Troop 388 Nerco won Attendance and Advancement. Permits were issued for store room and storage renovations at three local addresses.
Mrs. F J Morrell head of Triple M section closes its second year on June 13 with 95 members and a Self Improvement program featuring Longfellow quotes. Mrs Day Jewis installs new officers and committees for the coming year. vocal numbers and a piano solo capped the programs.
Burnie Herschell Shinlever saw a mail order camera ad in 1990 and chose photography as a vocation. He established a Clinton studio in 1904 and remained active in the field thereafter. The text also notes that a Brontosaurus weighed about 40 tons.
