Ten American men arrived in Mexico City from Havana after being released from Cuban prisons by the Castro government. U.S. Consul Vernon MecIninch said embassy officials arranged their flight to the United States with families paying fare. Names were not disclosed. they were held on drug charges.
Commerce Secretary Juanita Kreps announced a $1.8 billion drought relief package for Northern California. The aid aims to support water infrastructure and emergency measures in affected communities.
The U S dollar fell to 2 4871 Swiss francs from 2 4914 and opened at 36 02 Belgian francs. In Tokyo it closed at 271 80 yen, a two month low, as gold eased to 140 25 in London and British sterling also dipped.
A Blumenthal memorandum shows the Administration supporting elimination of the half dollar and a smaller one dollar coin, asking Congress to decide in the current session. The $1 coin would be bigger than a quarter but smaller than the current half dollar.

In Johannesburg a group of three armed men opened fire on a white gathering at the John Orrs department store hub, killing two men and critically wounding a third. The assailants used Russian made submachine guns and tossed a grenade during the attack.
