Total employment in the River side San Bernardino area rose to a record 221 800 in April, up 4500 from February and 13 500 from a year earlier. Farm activity and services drove two thirds of the gain with manufacturing up 700 since February. Unemployment declined seasonally but stayed above 1956 levels.
Hubert Bynum, commercial instructor and supervisor of the work program at CHS, was honored at the regular Coronal assembly with this year's Coronal dedicated to him. He expressed surprise at the recognition and gratitude for the honor.
Garland Kring, 34, a Corona oil well worker, was crushed to death yesterday at an oil well site near the Prado Dam. The accident happened as the crew attempted to lift a heavy drill stand that had fallen, with his brother-in-law Sherman Muse watching.
Lee Garcia Rodriguez of Corona received a suspended sentence and three years probation plus a $300 fine for stealing a calf from Corona rancher Raymond Becerra. The sentence was issued in Riverside Superior Court yesterday.
Carl Westover, 38, an inmate at San Quentin Prison honor farm, escaped from his dormitory bed around 4 a.m. leaving a dummy made of old clothes with a football head to mislead guards. Associate Warden L S Nelson noted the ruse failed as the body double was discovered an hour later.
Corona Chamber of Commerce calls for the new Riverside County Board of Freeholders to devise an economical and efficient county buildings program. The advisory note emphasizes voters rejected large bond schemes and urges the board to outline a prudent plan reflecting a countywide mandate.
Clarence M. Belvin of Los Angeles Airways announced the airline, and 35 other U S scheduled carriers, won the National Safety Council Award of Honor for a 1956 safe record with no passenger fatalities. The carrier flew 3,216,003 revenue miles and carried 44 461 560 pounds of air mail plus 4,062,730 pounds of air express over ten years.
John Figeira head of the L A Young Spring and Wire Co was unanimously elected chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Manufacturing Division replacing W W Nichols who resigned as division chairman upon leaving the American Foundry now Corona Tile and Ceramics Co Nichols joined Ply wood Products Co which is building a plant on Railroad St Harold Kelvington re elected co chairman and presided at a luncheon at the Hickory Barbecue He proposed a committee to study controversial issues but the group voted to handle such matters division wide Kelvington outlined a program to aid existing and incoming industries and to benefit schools which train the future labor pool.
The infant daughter of Mr and Mrs John W Kinsey of Temes eal Canyon died this morning at Corona Hospital. She is survived by a sister Jonilyn two and by paternal grandparents Wayne Kinsey Corona and maternal grandparents Raymond Holzworth Beaver Pa. Private services will be held at Crestlawn Memorial Park tomorrow with Bell Thomas Mortuary in charge.
The 1957 legislative session ended with partisan rifts over water policy. Lawmakers failed to pass a constitutional amendment or sanction joint San Luis Project construction and did not fund further Feather River Project costs. A new joint interim water rights committee was created while tax levels and old age pensions were expanded in the final budget.
The ravaged body of six year old Mary De Caussin was found in a field near her home in Ecorse Township. Police said she had been beaten and raped, with hands tied behind her back. An all night search by nearly 2000 police and volunteers followed her disappearance reported by Mr. and Mrs. Edmund de Caussin Jr.

The forecast shows night and morning low clouds and fog along the coast and inland valleys of Southern California through Friday with focal drizzle. Coastal and intermediate valleys see partial clearing in the afternoon while mountains and deserts stay sunny but windy with blowing dust in desert valleys. Red China warned that further aggression will be met with the full might of its armed forces after charging U S planes invaded Chinese waters. The U S Navy reported Chinese coastal batteries opened fire on an American carrier plane eight miles off the Chinese mainland as Peiping denounced the incident as a planned attack. Peiping’s official organs and radio broadcast a vow that if American forces invade China they will strike back with smashing blows. The State Department declined comment pending Navy findings and possible protest to Peiping.

The discussion covered Suez operations, mine threats, and regional tensions with Lebanon, Britain, and the United States weighing in. A separate report notes rebels ambushing a bus in western Algeria, killing two European passengers as tensions rise in the region.
The Department seeks a summary judgment in federal court to halt the proposed 2.5 billion merger of Bethlehem Steel Corp and Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. This comes after a Supreme Court ruling found Du Pont stock holdings in General Motors violated antitrust laws.
