Charles Vangieren of Maplewood New Jersey was jailed on 25000 bail in Reno on a charge of threatening President Ford. UPI reports he told a Douglas County deputy I have arisen from the dead and I’m going to kill President Ford. US District Court Judge Bruce Thompson ordered psychiatric examination.
President Ford proclaims July 24 a National Day of Prayer and asks Americans to seek strength for national challenges. The proclamation, urged by Congress, calls for unity and freedom while recalling Revolutionary era faith and a 1775 call for a national day of prayer.
Myron Bolsted 35 of Paradise was booked on suspicion of murder after his mother Alma Bolsted 60 was found dead in her home with wounds on the head. Deputies said she died from some form of strangulation and had been dead since Tuesday night.
Schools chief Wilson Riles told the state Board of Education that federal reimbursement for educating Vietnamese refugees will not be full. He outlined a sliding scale proposal where federal funding starts with full cost in year one then 80 percent, 60 percent, and declines to zero by year five, with the state covering the remainder.

Jim Cannon, 54, a Brawley farm equipment dealer, was found guilty by a U.S. District Court jury of conspiracy to transport stolen property in interstate commerce. Jury verdict followed a scheme involving at least $14,000 worth of farm gear sold out of state. Co defendant Harold Miller, 42, pleaded guilty and drew five years to run concurrently with a prior nine year sentence. Judge Gordon Thompson Jr. set sentencing for July 26.
Sacramento lawmakers will miss the constitutionally required budget deadline. Assembly Speaker Leo McCarthy says the $11.5 billion plan should reach the governor for signature on June 20. A six-member conference committee from Senate and Assembly works on a final version after deliberations began Tuesday.
Sacramento lawmakers move SB330 by Senator Arlen Gregorio through the Criminal Justice Committee on a 5-0 vote. The measure would allow judges to offer a year long alcoholism treatment program instead of suspending or revoking licenses for convicted drunken drivers.
Sacramento reports 110 additional miles of the California Aqueduct will open to walk-in fishing on June 29, bringing total accessible canal length to 343 miles. Thirty six access points will be added between Kettlemen City and the A D Edmonston Pumping Plant near the Tehachapi Mountains. Air France flight 193 a Boeing 747 burst into flames on the runway at Bombay International Airport. Salvage crews cleared debris as cancellations affected incoming jets.
Police and FBI search for 16 year old Elizabeth Ann and 18 month old Robert Michael Bollinger who disappeared after babysitter Jeanette Willis took the child to a grocery errand. They were last seen at a Lawndale drugstore. Willis may be with her boyfriend.

President Ford and Israeli Prime Minister Rabin held talks with Secretary Kissinger calling the meeting a considerable step forward in Middle East peace. Cleveland Plain Dealer reports a House subcommittee chair says at least one foreign leader was killed in a CIA assassination plot. Possible victims include Patrice Lumumba, Rafael Trujillo, or Gen Rene Schneider. Rep James Stanton refuses to name the victim.
The California Senate passed SB204 to boost liquor taxes by 40 million dollars to fund expanded alcoholism programs. The bill, authored by Sen. Arlen Gregorio, was sent to the Assembly on a 26-9 vote despite critics arguing the costs should be borne by all taxpayers rather than the liquor industry. Sen. Ralph C. Dills condemned the move calling alcoholism a public disease and urging broad public funding.
The Big Apple Trading Post plans to open by July 4 in the former Big Apple general store building after a two year vacancy. Ray Carson will oversee operations with Woodrow Hall as manager, bringing decades in marketing and retail. Booths for rent will fill most of the space with a central department area and expressed plans for churches and garage sale spaces.
Edna E Christenson aged 88 died at home 433 West 8th Street Saturday. Born in Arkansas July 8 1886 she came to Corona seven years ago. Private services were held at Thomas Miller Mortuary with burial in Mountain View Cemetery San Bernardino. Ethel M Harris 85 died Wednesday in a Riverside convalescent home resident of 3712 Rossmuir since moving from Whit tier three years ago. Surviving sister Clara Harris Anaheim and nephew Clarence Anderson Riverside graveside services at 3 p m at Thomas Miller Mortuary with interment in Fairhaven Memorial Park.
