Residents name desired trips from Ensenada and San Francisco to Hawaii Las Vegas and Chicago while one plans staycations due to illness and work. Young graduates picture a Sierra hike after high school in a summer of study and work.
The Corona Senior High School commencement ceremony at the football field celebrated 422 graduates before about 4,000 attendees. Principal Phil Donohue presented the class to Superintendent Dr. John W. Stallings for certification as the board members received diplomas. Salutatorian Susan Allen spoke of community support and future opportunities, while valedictorian Carol Russum urged initiative and new ideas.
Senate Republican Leader Everett Dirksen told United Press International Congress has no choice but to follow the President in Viet Nam policy. He argued for bipartisanship and international cooperation and said any decision on bombing Hanoi or Red China would rely on military recommendations.
Mostly sunny today with gusty afternoon winds and slightly warmer temperatures. Noon reading 75 on the thermometer, yesterday’s high reached 79 while the overnight low was 5.
Astronaut Edward White recounted his June 3 space walk during Gemini 4, describing using a space gun to propel himself toward the void and later attaching a camera. He said he felt like walking on the spacecraft and considered the vast Earth-linked view and audience of 194 million Americans watching.
Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. said he is available to run for New York City mayor if asked, after Mayor Wagner announced he would not seek a fourth term. The New York Democratic field shifts with Rep. John Lindsay already in the independent Republican race, while Sen. Robert F. Kennedy praised Roosevelt as a potential candidate.
Government forces cleared the Dong Xoai area in a bitter engagement with the Viet Cong and moved north to aid a shattered relief column. US casualty figures stood at 31 in the battle with one dead, 17 missing, and 13 wounded, as eight more Americans died in a crash in the central highlands.
Corona High standout Roger Moody will join USC Trojan Track Club for a two day USTFF meet in Bakersfield as part of the varsity and freshman entry. Moody, a Corona High alumnus and top hurler, will push for a place at NCAA championships in Berkeley alongside teammates Greg Heet John Link and Steve Johnson and other Trojan runners led by Paul Kerry and Theo Wirtz.
In Saigon, Premier Phan Huy Quat resigns and says he will hand back government to the military. He clashed with Chief of State Phan Khac Suu after dismissing two cabinet members, with Suu opposing the moves.
In Plainfield New Jersey a blaze swept the Victoria Hotel killing two people and leaving two others missing believed dead. About 110 guests slept as 14 were injured including a police officer who made six rescues before being overwhelmed. Firefighters battled flames seen twenty miles away and authorities sealed a four block area while searching for additional victims. Michael Petti was found in a bathtub on the third floor and another victim named Mercla identified only by that name.
An editorial in the Peking People’s Daily claims China could send troops to Vietnam if U.S. forces directly engage, noting President Johnson ordered American ground forces into direct combat on June 8 and calling the U.S. actions a Korea-type escalation.
Kirk Parmenter 78, longtime Norco promoter of the Norco Valley Fair, is in Corona Community Hospital with pneumonia. He moved to Norco 35 years ago and led the fair’s early growth. Parmenter served on the original Norco Park District Board of Directors and was its president for seven years.
