Pittsburgh Man Enlists After Half Dollar Bet

Edward Fitzgerald of Pittsburgh joined the Canadian Seventh Battalion after gambling a half-dollar with Reed Benham of Wenatchee. The coin chose Seattle. Fitzgerald enlisted for Vancouver, went to Vimy Ridge on Easter Monday, and was wounded in the right forearm at Orpington hospital. Benham remains in France.

Tom Phillips of Wichita Kansas quit his street car job to join the war and sailed for England with Tom La oach of Oakland California. He landed in August 1915 and joined the Welsh Guards. Phillips recalls his friend Tom killed at Ypres in July 1916 and his own injuries from bayonet, a wrist and leg wound, and head surgery after the Somme fighting.

Santa Fe Plans Southwest Branch Lines Expansion
