The House failed to override President Ford's veto of a bill to crack down on coal strip mining. The 278 to 143 vote left the administration with a four vote margin. The measure would have set federal standards, banned strip mining in some areas, and placed others under state control.
County Administrator Ray Johnson announced all 164 county firemen returned to work by the 8 a.m. deadline after accepting a new contract. The deal grants a 5 percent pay raise effective July 28, with striking workers facing a 12 week delay.
