Corona School Board Delays Over Architectural Error

Night-Owl firemen save Merrihew home from blaze

Fire started in the Merrihew garage at 1 47 a.m. when their 1956 Chevrolet station wagon burned. Regulars on duty at the station halted the fire with help from volunteers who were playing cards after a station dinner. Fire Chief Glen Hart credits timely regulars for the quick stop and notes budget requests for more staff.

Youth Breaks Up Teenage Party

A party at the home of Charles Wood, a junior high school teacher, was broken up Saturday at 10 30 by an intruding local youth. The former Corona Senior High School student reportedly insulted guests and fled before police could arrive. The Woods reside at 1857 Via Santiago in Coronita.

Bob Smith Collapses on Pier Halting Hawaii Cruise

Bob Smith a Corona florist collapsed on the dock an hour before his long planned Hawaii cruise aboard the Lurline. He was taken to Long Beach Hospital where doctors advised against sailing and began tests to determine the cause. His parents visited and reported he could sit up and feed himself but will stay hospitalized and rest after returning home.

Local Plant to Produce Full Glass Fiber Line at Corona

L O F Glass Fibers plans a complete line of thermal and acoustical insulation glass fiber products at its Corona California plant slated to open August 1. The 105000 square foot facility will melt marbles to draw and blow glass fibers, then finish into insulation materials. Manufacturing will begin with basic glass fiber production and later move high temperature insulation components for aircraft to Corona. Official ground breaking was February 5 1958 with foundations and tilt-up walls completed despite rain.

Argentine airliner crashes near Rio with 22 aboard

An Argentine state airline plane with two engines out crashed on Ilha Grande Island near Rio de Janeiro. All 22 passengers were rescued, with injured travelers being flown to Rio by helicopter. Circumstances remain unclear.

Dover Manufacturer Plans New Sherman Plant

John Smith of Dover Manufacturing Co describes plans for a new Verdun Industries plant near Sherman and Railroad Streets to Building Inspector Edgar Hollenbeck. The $175,000 permit covers main shop and mill buildings by Butler steel and a 2240 square foot office. The $193,000 project includes an 40,000 square foot shop, 10,000 square foot mill, sprinkler system, parking for 100 cars, and a half-mile chain link fence. Completion is expected by August with a Santa Fe rail spur and 150 local workers.

Air Force aims three lunar shots this year

Air Force Lt. Gen. S. E. Anderson said three attempts to reach the moon would occur in August September and October. If misses occur the plan is to place a long elliptical orbit around the moon. Travel time from earth to the moon would be about 244 days. Dulles hints China in future test ban talks.

Reds to Free Two Priests Sunday

Two American priests held in Red China prisons are expected to be freed Sunday. Joseph P. McCormick of Ossining New York and Cyril P. Wagner of Pittsburgh were arrested in Shanghai June 15 1953 and sentenced to five years. Remaining detainees include four civilians with 15 years to life terms.
