Corona city clerk R N Annis explains parking meters fund off street parking projects and future improvements. The 1954 revenue stayed above 1000 dollars monthly, peaking over 1600 in November as two meters and coin counting equipment paid for themselves.
John W. Morgan a local building contractor has begun a 1500 square foot addition at the rear of the Corona Daily Independent building. The reinforced concrete structure will house press equipment and extra storage space.
Private graveside services were held at Sunnyslope Cemetery for Debra Ann Clowers infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter L Clowers of Home Gardens. The baby lived only a few hours after arriving at Corona Hospital by ambulance. Survived by parents and two sisters Betty Lou and Dorothy Mae Clowers. Bell-Thomas Mortuary in charge.
A grass fire Thursday burned about one and a half acres between Second and Third on Temescal Avenue in Norco. State Division of Forestry officials reported no damage and said the cause may have been children playing with matches.
A 14 year old Hemet girl Shirley Tabor drowned at Mission Bay while on a Saint Hyacinth's Catholic Academy San Jacinto school picnic. She and a companion were swept from shore by a large wave as they swam in shoulder depth water.
The Calamity Jane rescue truck, built for peacetime emergencies, carries portable generators pumps and cutting gear to disaster scenes nationwide. It emphasizes civilian protection rather than creating tension while maintaining self sufficiency in national civil defense efforts.
In rural areas beyond city water lines with no electricity the truck's built in versatility has saved lives in buildings razed by tornado or blast. Its equipment has been found useful by fire departments to reach people trapped in burning structures as more than 350 such vehicles have been delivered to Civil Defense agencies across the country with many more on order.
The FCDA Rescue School at Olney Maryland trains eight man crews to use a 140 horsepower disaster truck with a 15 000 pound winch and 300 items of 99 kinds of equipment. In past major incidents in Flint Worcester Chester and South Philadelphia the truck and crew freed victims using debris buckets shovels portable cutting gear and hydraulic jacks. The truck can reach scenes at up to 60 mph and opens on three sides to aid access.
Twenty eight patients at the Long Beach Veterans Administration Hospital completed requirements for graduation from the Long Beach Evening High School and will take part in exercises Friday June 10 1955 at Polytechnic High School Long Beach California Dr B E V Edwards manager announced. Twenty three other patients have completed requirements of their former schools.
Marjorie Lussier an 18 year old collapsed in front of Schwartz Furniture on Sixth Street yesterday and spent the night in Corona hospital. She is reported to be resting nicely at home.

Noted Shakespearean actor Walter Hampden is reported in very satisfactory condition at Cedars of Lebanon hospital in Hollywood after a mild stroke. Hampden has been on the stage for four years.
Mrs. Clair Hutchison recalls teaching at Rugby School, burned in 1918, near Corona’s Glen Ivy area. She remembers the blaze starting from a wood stove and notes the Citrus Belt District helped relocate classes to Temescal Canyon.
