Jury Trials Sought On Disturbing and Speeding Charges

Justice Court faces pending jury trials for three defendants. John O Tuntland of Riverside denies a property disturbance near Lake Matthews on May 22 and seeks a jury trial set for July 8 at 10 am. Josephine Lottie Anderson Roberts of Bell requests a jury trial for a May 30 driving while intoxicated charge, with July 1 at 10 am scheduled. Kenneth L Kriftin of Fullerton pleads not guilty to speeding in an ambulance case, with a jury trial set for June 24 at 10:06 am.

Grace Powers Services to Be Held Wednesday

Rachael Grace Powers 70 of 212 West Seventh Street died Sunday at Riverside Hospital. She lived with her daughter Mrs Eileen Powers in Corona the last eight months. Born in Marshall Minnesota she came to California in 1941. During World War II she served as a nurse at Bremerton Naval Hospital. Survived by daughter a grandson Dade Powers of Corona and three brothers Patrick Alfred and Lambert Starrett of Seattle. Down payment cuts for veterans in new housing rule

The new Government Housing Regulation X lowers down payments for veterans to five percent for non veterans five percent on some values. no change to mortgage terms. For a $10 000 house veterans pay 5.8 percent now from 6 percent, non veterans 14.4 percent from 15 percent. On $15 000 vet 17 percent from 23. non vet 25 percent from 28. On $25 000 vet 35 percent from 45. non vet 40 percent from 50. Builders say veterans housing will boom while credit terms for others disappoint.

More than 100 members of the California Newspaper Advertising Managers Association gathered at the Santa Barbara Biltmore for the 27th annual convention. Corona's Eg E Hammond of the Daily Independent was chosen secretary treasurer representing the southern unit and served as program director and entertainment chair. Notables included Raymond Bill of Sales Manager Magazine and A W Andy Neally of Batten Barton Durstine Osburn. Next year’s convention will be at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco.

Replacing Raymond A McCarthy amid health issues Claude W Edwards becomes president and general manager of Alpha Beta Food Markets effective June 2. McCarthy becomes honorary chairman of the board after serving since 1939 while Philip B Gerrard of Santa Ana joins the board. Edwards, long tied to Corona and Pomona roots, has led operations since 1944.

Several Autos Damaged in Local Crashes In Lawndale and Nearby

Early today Jay E. Kington 23 of West 166th Street Lawndale ran into a wig wag signal at the Santa Fe crossing on Main Street. He escaped with scratches and his car was damaged. Friday night Salvador Russo and Daniel Reyes were in a minor collision at North Crand and Joy. Earl Henson and Carlos Cervantes had a broadside crash on Sixth Street at Main. Lucille Cummings Lorez’s Riverside car was damaged when Lee O Stewart’s truck hit it while parked Ramona and the driver looked away momentarily.

Sheriffs Probe Third Attempted Break-In at Eagles Lodge Hall

Stolen 1941 Ford V-8 Pick-Up Reported From City Lot

A green 1941 Ford V-8 pickup owned by Faustino F. Fredericks of 359 Rimpaw Avenue was reported stolen Saturday. Police said it was taken while parked at the old Safeway lot on West Sixth. the toolbox inside held cement finishing tools.

Three Injured In Freeway Collision West of Corona

A three person crash near Green River on the Corona Freeway in the Santa Ana canyon left I W Jameson and Dorothy Jameson with a serious back injury and facial lacerations while Ralph L Snyder had contusions. Both cars were traveling east on the highway around 11 30 am and were taken to Corona hospital by Brown Funeral Home ambulance.

Seafarers Club Plans Progressive Dinner Event

The Seafarers Club of the First Congregational church will host a progressive dinner Tuesday evening. The first course is at 1117 Victoria avenue at 6 30 pm with Ev and Eleanor Walters serving. Afterward the group moves to the church basement for fur and entertainment.
