At least 35 dead in the Speculator mine disaster in Butte Montana after an explosion in the main shaft. Rescue teams work to reach 167 men believed trapped and possibly perished.
The Corona chamber of commerce board convened in its new Lord building quarters. Furnishings were discussed, exhibits of Corona products planned, ladies rest rooms to be added, and signage for tourists. A Los Angeles Press Club entertainment plan for a Glen Ivy visit was laid out with a welcoming committee and a tour of local points of interest.
War orders for ships flood Pacific coast shipyards as the greatest shipbuilding era in history begins, driving rapid construction and mobilizing industrial capacity across the region.
Ford Garage promotes Non Olio polish to keep vehicles looking new and shining. The ad emphasizes convenient maintenance and service to retain car finish and appeal.
The second class in First Aid will start after 25 enrollments. Nine names already entered. Dr Geith will teach with a $2 fee. Men are urged to join, and names may be given to Mrs T C Stas or at Red Cross HQ daily 1 to 5 p m.
The Citrus Belt School district ended the year with a river picnic five miles north of town. Mothers laid out a bountiful feast as children swam and played all morning. Attendees included Mesdames Winnedge Langwell Koenig and others plus several boys and girls.
Mr and Mrs W H Nichols arrive in Corona and reside at the C A Holloway home on Belle avenue. Nichols is a expert machinist at the Exchange By-Products plant working on special machinery. He formerly worked for the government at Key West Florida.
Alameda has paid 1 000 000 dollars for Bay farms acreage along the east shore. Plans are under way to develop industrial sites and a model town on the land.
School faculty members list diverse summer plans across many cities and states. Miss McPhee will study in Berkeley and a Spanish boarding school, while Miss Clark and Mr. Haag await firmer plans. Several couples plan marriages or travel to El Toro, Riverside, Vancouver, and beaches in Corona and Los Angeles.
Miss M Louise Oakey and Mr S E Field of El Toro wed in Redlands in a quiet double ceremony with Miss Jessie Field and Mr Ira Shambaugh of Clorinda Iowa as the other couple. The couple plans a short honeymoon and will reside in El Toro.
A large Beaumont cherry crop is noted for the area while plans for steel production in electric furnaces advance in Southern California. Electricity is expected to replace coke due to its growing scarcity and the region’s industrial shift.
The 14 month old son of millionaire J. Holland Keet was found dead in an abandoned well near Springfield. The infant had been kidnapped from his home on May 30 while the parents attended a Country club social function.
Brig. Gen. John J. Pershing was formally presented to King George and held a private audience. Among committee participants for American entertainment are Mrs. John Astor, Mrs. Whitelaw Reid, Mrs. W. W. Phipps, Mrs. R. Craig McKerrow, Washington Wood, Almeric Paget, and L. W. Blackwell.
In Corona schools the pupils donated coins totaling 28 dollars to support the local Red Cross. One class even sacrificed a last day treat to contribute, and the Red Cross committee thanks teachers for cooperation and invites further summer contributions like tin foil and old newspapers.
Critics say a 15 per cent freight increase is unnecessary as road traffic grows. They question why higher costs are accepted for other goods when producers also report larger business volumes.
About ninety members drove to Cold Water for a summer picnic. Guests swam in the plunge and danced in the hall after a picnic supper. The event, organized by George Snidecor Dee McConnell and G Wright, was praised as a well arranged gathering.
