James L. Groot, longtime top assistant to Senator Edward Gurney, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy and agreed to testify against Gurney. The plea came during the 15th week of the bribery conspiracy trial of Groot, Gurney and three other defendants.
An ecclesiastical court in Washington found Reverend William A. Wendt guilty of disobeying his bishop by allowing an irregularly ordained woman to preside at holy communion. The court urged Bishop William Creighton to admonish the priest and to forbid ordination irregularities in his parish.
Greek Cypriot leader Glafkos Clerides threatens to leave U N talks on Cyprus if Turkish Cypriots press ahead with a referendum on a constitution for the autonomous federated state they declared in the island’s north.
A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck 20 miles south of Bakersfield near Wheeler Ridge at 7:47 a.m. PDT. No injuries or damage reported as seismologists traced the event to the Tehachapi Mountains region. Oil price tensions and market fears contributed to a broad stock market drop on the NYSE, with the Dow off 5.79 to 834.17 amid 9 million shares traded.
Hugh Tosteson, 14, son of a University of Puerto Rico professor from San German, Puerto Rico, wins the 1975 National Spelling Bee topping runner up Mark Ogle of Greenwood Indiana. Tosteson earns the $1,000 prize after spelling sincisor while Ogle misspelled prilliantine and corrected.
Two storm systems unleashed strong winds and heavy rain across the Midwest and Southeast. A tornado was reported near Poplar Bluff Missouri. Wind gusts reached 90 mph at Point Lookout Missouri. Airport damage occurred in Joplin Anderson and Noel Missouri. Hail struck Oklahoma near Enid and Alva. Joplin recorded over an inch of rain in the pre dawn hours.
The Assembly Transportation Committee narrowly rejected SB13 by Sen. Nate Holden 7-6, keeping intact a state rule requiring smog devices on used cars at ownership change. Gov Brown earlier halted the LA NOx program for 1966-70 used cars but left ownership change requirements. Holden cited Brown’s studies claiming ineffectiveness.
Oscar winning cinematographer Haskel Wexler and several film industry figures were subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury examining the Weather Underground terrorist group. Wexler said he cannot comment yet as discussions were just begun after a New York visit.
UPI reported last month Laos and the United States faced a diplomatic strain when protesters seized the U.S. aid compound. Prime Minister Souvanna Phouma walked out of a meeting with Charge d affaires Christian Chapman who pressed for protection of American facilities. USAID operations were shut down after the seizure.
Continental Baking Co. owner of Wonderbread and Hostess Cupcakes filed two federal suits charging six leading sugar refiners with price fixing under the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. Named defendants include Great Western Sugar Denver Holly Sugar Californian and Hawaiian Sugar American Crystal Amalgamated Sugar and Consolidated Foods. Continental is a CT TELGRAPH subsidiary based in Rye New York.
President Ford tears up at Holton Arms when Susan Ford, 17, receives her diploma from headmaster. He urges ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment as 1,300 attend the private girls school ceremony in Washington. Susan, last of four Ford children to graduate, is joined by Barbara Manfuso while brothers Steven and Michael witness.
The Senate rejected by voice vote an amendment to a 25 billion defense bill that would have required 200000 U S troops to be withdrawn from overseas bases. Sen Sam Nunn warned the move would wreck NATO and SALT talks while Sen Barry Goldwater argued U S forces were already being reduced in Asia. He noted Thailand bases and a 17000 current Thai troop level and warned of grave Korea risks as Gravel and opponents clashed over Soviet threat assessments.
Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr signed historic farm labor legislation in Sacramento to create a model for the nation. The bill gives up to 250000 California farm workers the right to a secret ballot union vote, allows harvest strikes by a winning union, curbs secondary boycotts, requires union membership, and lets growers hire nonunion help. A five member board will administer the measure, taking effect Aug 28 ahead of the grape harvest.
The Norco City Council voted 4-1 to pave Pacific Second to flood channel, Western Second to Parkridge, and Seventh Crestview to California after a public hearing. Opponents Carrol Chambers and Carlos Hernandez cited unfair assessments with Chambers noting a $500 share double that of Western facing homes. The city will cover 75 percent of costs and a follow up hearing will occur once precise costs are known.

Norco Mayor Richard Brown names Travis Tab Smith to the parks and recreation commission. Jerry Riley is reappointed to the planning commission and Floyd Paine to the community services commission. Two additional appointments are deferred to a later date.

The White House announced President Ford signed the Federal Share of Highway Projects Act late Wednesday night to boost sagging highway work. The measure lets states transfer federal funds between categories until Sept 30 and temporarily waive matching funds for federally assisted projects.
