Mostly sunny conditions with scattered coastal and interior cloudiness. Mountain and interior regions see variable morning and night cloud cover. Slight warmth in the afternoon with a high around 81 and a low near 51. Noon temperature forecast around 79.
Incumbent supervisor William E. Jones wins 6,904 to 3,449 over Everett Grubb with 7 of 267 precincts reporting. Roman Warren defeats Bealie Barnes in the Third district, signaling a possible board control change. Marvin Bledsoe secures the Democratic nomination for California Assembly to face Republican Lee Backstrand in November. John Phillips holds a strong re election bid for Congress as precincts tally in Riverside and Imperial counties.
The state begins Main Street improvements with a new storm water drain under Sixth Street at the Main Street intersection. A Teichert & Sons builds the drain. Preparations start resurfacing Main from Ontario to the city units on Hamner and installing new railroad crossing signals. Curbs will be lowered by gutter filling to enable parallel parking.
A deceased Portola Democrat Lester T. Davis won the Democratic nomination for the second assembly district by a wide margin in San Francisco. Davis died of a heart attack in May, and district leaders urged Democrats to vote for him to block a Republican. The Democratic central committees will appoint a substitute for November ballots.

Eugene Russell of Corona will graduate from the U S Coast Guard Academy in New London Conn Friday. He ranks ninth in his class and holds academy records for the 100 and 220 yard sprints. He has made two Atlantic training cruises aboard the Eagle one of Horst Wessel renames. He expects assignment to a navy destroyer escort on the West Coast and plans to drive home with his parents around June 22 after a stop in Springfield HI June 15 for Golden Wedding anniversary events.
The search for John Wade age 3, nephew of Corona merchant C W Harris, ongoing since May 4 in Aztec New Mexico. A $10,000 reward is offered for his return or locating him. John described with blue eyes and a distinctive hair spot, last seen at home wearing a red T shirt and blue white bib overalls. Contact Rev Anthem Wade in Aztec New Mexico with any information.
Ferraro's Inc. of Arlington opens a television and appliance store at 120 West Sixth Street in Corona. The store will handle Philco products with R. K. Bryson as manager. Television service is available now and a service department is planned.
At the Corona Chamber of Commerce breakfast parking meter details were revealed. The plan calls for permanent meters in three to four months with a nickel buys one hour in the one hour zone and extra coins for more time. Two hour zones will enforce a two hour limit. off street lots may also carry two hour limits. Some oppose permanent meters and want off street facilities before long. City Manager Mount said Main Street crosswalks will be removed after improvements. The chamber will seek naming the Corona Freeway from Corona to Highway 101 via Cranthethorpe.
Dwight D. Eisenhower’s Abilene speech will be aired nationwide on four radio networks and two TV networks. NBC and CBS will provide live or simultaneous coverage from Abilene with CBS also airing a 7 pm transcription and Mutual Broadcasting System to carry its radio transcription.
Lyle Swaney incoming president of the Corona Rotary club returned yesterday from Mexico City where he attended the Rotary International convention. His second cousin H. J. Brunnier of San Francisco was elected international president. Also at tending the convention were Mr and Mrs Frank Ware who plan to return soon. They traveled by plane.
Unofficial returns from 34 precincts show Temescal District judge candidates Mary Alice Sutter and Willie Caudill leading their opponents in a likely November 4 runoff. Sutter leads in Corona and Tastvale while Caudill wins Home Gardens. Rowell and Angell also show notable support in Norco and Corona. Local totals favor Jones over Grubb for the county supervisor race.
The Senate approved ending rent controls next March 1 by a 48 to 34 vote, adopting an amendment to extend controls only to that date instead of June 30, 193. In separate coverage, Edward D. Reed a 23 year old Medford student minister was sentenced in San Francisco to up to five years and a $10,000 fine for violating the selective service act after being found guilty of refusing induction.
The report notes the Koje island operations by General Haydon Boatner to secure ammunition for UN negotiators. It details the rescue of 17 anti Communist prisoners from a single compound and the capture of 75 Red leaders, suggesting possible murder trials. Red kangaroo courts have reportedly killed hundreds.

Knowland leading both party tickets in the California senatorial race with about 1,008,650 votes to McKinnon’s 107,169 on the Republican side while Kefauver and Brown led in other districts. Democratic totals place Knowland at 742,800 to McKinnon’s 474,365 as 15,707 precincts report.
Taft holds a 696 vote lead with 48 precincts uncounted as Ike supporters claim a narrow win in Washington. George Mickelson acknowledges Taft’s apparent edge but refuses to concede. 30,000 greet Eisenhower in Abilene as he plans a major policy speech. Steel industry and union officials meet at the White House to seek wage dispute settlement.
Senator Burnet Maybank introduces a plan to grant the President power to seize the steel industry during a wage dispute. An emergency board would set terms. if rejected by unions or management, government seizure could occur. Taft calls the proposal harsher on labor than the Taft Hartley law. Wholesale prices also dip for a second week as Dunn & Bradstreet reports the index down. Truman signs 55 million dollar flood control appropriation for Mississippi and Missouri flood repairs. Taft campaign notes claim near clinched nomination with delegates and a disputed U S tabulation showing Taft ahead Eisenhower.
