After Rip Russell hit a homer with the bases loaded in the first inning off Tom Sunkel, he suffered his first loss, then Passeau dominated. Bonham’s era slipped as he allowed eight hits in a 4-1 defeat of the White Sox. The Dodgers idle due to weather widened their margin to 1 1/2 games in the National League race and trim the Cards 4-3 in St Louis. Reds lost to Phillies 2-1 in 10 innings at Cincinnati. Browns beat the Senators 9-5 in Washington. Knott kept Detroit to six hits as the Athletics won 5-1.
