London The Princess Royal the Countess of Harewood will undergo a thyroid gland operation, a physicians' bulletin announced. The Princess has suffered from ophthalmic goiter for some time, and medical treatment has not brought a cure. The bulletin says the thyroid will be treated by surgery.

The board of supervisors approved a cooperative agreement with the state division of forestry to set aside 8675 in the next budget for county forest fire protection. F Nelander of the forest service noted unusually high hazard this summer with nine calls on Sunday and a 200 acre fire controlled in 20 minutes.
Two UCLA students Edward Rimpau and Donald McDevitt disappeared after a boat trip on Saturday. Coast Guard and rescue teams searched the Pacific between San Pedro and Santa Monica while the youths, unaware they were listed missing, returned home and attended classes on Monday.
San Bernardino police report Farl Hall of Los Angeles drove his wife and their dog off a 200 foot cliff at Cajon Pass then beat her with a rock. Hall, 38, is jailed on suspicion of attempted murder. the wife is hospitalized in critical condition. The dog died in the fall.

Installation of new pavement on Magnolia avenue from Arlington to Madison in Riverside will be completed this week. The $10,650 project uses quarter-cent gasoline tax funds and includes five inch macadam on the north side and a 30 foot wide roadway with combination curbs and gutters. This is the third municipal project funded by the gas tax for this biennium.
