Knights of Pythias hold San Diego class of 92

Red Star Lodge of San Diego, the largest in the world, conferred the Knight Bank on a class of 92 candidates. Seven from Corona were named Max Zumstein Harry Allen England James C Emerson Ernest Bullock Henry Yo and Marion Bethunin. The San Diego lodge arrived by boat with 800 in tow for a Memorial Service and march. An address by Grand Chancellor Stanley B Wilgon followed. Moonlit tailwatch became a favorite pastime for delegates during the homeward trip.

Printers of the Orange Belt to Host Porte at Meeting

Riverside county printers and the Orange Belt Association announce R T Porte of Porte Publishing in Salt Lake City will guest at the next regular meeting. Porte is a prominent editor and publisher with multiple Utah posts, described as a key figure in elevating printers. Over 50 trade representatives from various regions will attend a designed program at Mission Inn.

Bowden Sells Grocery, Gordon Takes Over Corona Store

Elmer A Bowden sells his grocery at 614 Main Street Corona to C Gordon of Pomona. Gordon, former Southern Illinois grocer, assumed ownership Tuesday and has moved his family to Corona. Bowden started the store two years ago and plans to rest awhile, likely remaining in Corona.

Liberated helpful flies aid groves in pest control efforts

Local horticultural inspectors released one thousand Aphycus Jounsburyi in infested groves to combat black scale and reduce fumigation needs. The Corona district covers 6600 acres of citrus and 1400 acres of deciduous orchards with eleven packing houses and two by products plants. Inspectors G. Tuthill and R. C. Veach report to Commissioner D. D. Sharp, monitoring scale control and pest protection across the district.

Corona Men Return From Long Arizona Sightseeing Trip

Rev. George H Holt and Harold Y Reynolds arrived home early Monday after a two week automobile tour through northern and southern Arizona. They described Petrified Forest wonders, Rainbow Forest colors, logged relics and trips through Holbrook Camp Verde Jerome and Montezuma Castle, with autographic camera work to capture the scenery.

State Legislature Passes Poll Tax Law for Aliens

The new alien poll tax becomes effective 90 days after the governor signs. It imposes a $10 annual tax, requires all aliens to register with the county clerk, and assigns collection to the county assessor. Experts say the tax applies until citizenship is granted and that filing first papers does not exempt an alien.

A Corona delegation attended the May 22 Convocation of San Bernardino earning two banners for highest attendance and largest Lenton offering per capita. At the diocesan rally in Los Angeles the school received the Bishop’s banner for highest attendance in the diocese, to remain in Corona for a year.

New District Law Signed To Align Elementary With High Schools

Governor W D Stephens signed a bill mandating all elementary districts join a high school district. Riverside county will be heavily affected with many districts outside high school districts joining one. Elsinore Corona Riverside West Riverside Glenavon and Wineville expected gains. The Independent reports a big semi annual clearance by Messrs BE and G Nichols at Fifth and Main Corona. Chas Davidoff of Progressive Advertising aids in the event to offer extraordinary bargains before summer heat. Nichols promises deep cuts on ladies men and children's goods and grocery items including high grade canned goods.

Miss Ross Ott and Miss Catherine Fraser Open Newport Beach Tea Room

Miss Ross Ott and Miss Catherine Fraser have opened a tea room at 106 Twenty second Street near the post office in Newport Beach. They plan to serve pies cakes and sandwiches with both women described as excellent cooks. Miss Mary Fraser will join for part of the summer to take Miss Fraser's place. Corona residents will be glad of the new seaside eatery this summer.

Southern California Fair Riverside set to break records

The Riverside Southern California Fair runs October 11 to 16 with record space and exhibits. W. W. Van Pelt reports expanding agricultural and horticultural displays across at least seven counties and twelve communities. Livestock show expectations rise, with Los Angeles easing impact and northern breeders showing interest, promising the state’s largest dairy, Duroc and Berkshire showcases.

Beekeeping Leaders Gather for Corona Ontario Meet

Corona bee inspector Mr T O Andrews will speak at the San Bernardino Riverside County beekeepers field meet on June 4 at Chaffee College Ontario. About five thousand bees in Corona apiaries yield over two tons honey. a large Corona delegation is expected. The program starts at 10 am with Prof. Benton on Bee Diseases, then talks on Increasing and Marketing Bees, Marketing Honey, Queen Rearing, and Location and Fire Protection. lunch is provided, and discussions follow.
