Corona reports a total fire loss under 19000 in the past year due to efficient volunteer crews and a 20000 dollar initial investment in fire apparatus. Fire Chief Elmer Bowen lists numerous grass and structure fires across the year with varying losses, noting insurance premiums fell as losses stayed low and rates eased for Corona property owners.
California's motor vehicle report shows 37,721 motorists convicted in the first half of 1925. Speeding accounts for 25,102 convictions and reckless driving for 5,855, together 82 percent. Licenses were revoked for 171 violators, with driving while intoxicated and speeding among the top causes.
Mrs. O Brower collapsed after using headache powders at home and was rushed to the hospital by Dr B S Allison. She improved this morning and was sent home. The powders, kept in the Brower confectionery store, are suspected to contain a virulent poison, possibly strychnine.
City trustees meet at city hall at 7 0p m for regular business. Wednesday prayer services held at all churches. Corona indoor team faces Redlands at Redlands. Rebekahs and Oddfellows picnic at city park Thursday. Masons supper at hall to confer master degree. Lions meet at 645 at Kinney hotel. Friday Rotary luncheon at 12 15. Saturday bargain day with advertisers. Sunday church service. Chamber hosts visiting eastern chemists. Monday Chamber of Commerce forum at city park.
The Christian and Methodist teams clashed at Recreation grounds in an indoor baseball bout. The Christians edged the Methodists 8 to 7 amid high tension and many errors, promising Baptists and Congregationalists a match next Monday on the same diamond.
Miss Gladys Kimball principal of Washington grammar school attends the University of Southern California summer session taking Education courses. The session attracts many nationally known instructors and enrolls more than 2400 participants making it the largest ever held at USC.
The National Automobile Club announces new New York State laws for motorists. Diving girls and similar posters are banned from windshields and rear windows. Front license plate must be visible. Car manufacturers and dealers must register new vehicles. It is a misdemeanor to attach insignia of groups one does not belong to onto a car.
Corona’s share amounts to 1770 with Riverside county receiving 15 800 as its portion of the California relief fund. Funds go to hospitals charitable institutions and schools aiding Santa Barbara after the disaster. Allocation bases follow population and valuation with 11 county sections.
Indians from Yosemite Mono and Yosemite tribes gather in Yosemite Valley for Indian Field Days on July 31 and August 1. Hosts Wilhehe and descendants of the valley’s original inhabitants plan contests in riding roping and stunts while decades-old rivalries shift to competition.
Plans for the Los Angeles county fair to be held in Pomona September 22 to 26 include a 126 foot grandstand addition with 6000 seats, 185 head of show horses, new stock barns, rest harbors, and a 60 by 136 foot judging ring. The event aims to showcase agricultural and stock producing possibilities with horse shows, dairy, poultry, cattle, sheep, and industrial exhibits, plus a junior fair and machinery displays.
Chemists arriving in Corona August 2 on way to Los Angeles will be met by Riverside and Corona hosts. They will tour Riverside district by car, lunch at Mission Inn, then visit Corona’s Lemonia grove and Circle City packing houses including Lemon Products plant. The event highlights local industries and hospitality by the chamber.
The Independent announces a regular monthly shipment of advertising cuts for use in advertiser columns. Ready to use illustrations and suggested copy are available now from the Western Newspaper Union, covering many business types and seasonally up to date. Chief of Police searched a service station premises after Earl Jump faced a Scot with a missing wallet. The pursuer claimed theft and demanded a search, but Long Beach officials confirmed Scotty’s papers were found on a stage there, ending the chase.
A National Automobile Club bulletin notes that autos registered on or after July 24 1926 with box or similar bodies used incidentally for produce and personal effects will not pay an additional Weight fee. An affidavit must state the vehicle is not used primarily for transporting property. A skeleton affidavit form for such registrations has been approved by the State Motor Vehicle Department.
