Santa Barbara roiled by a waterspout that formed suddenly in the bay and moved north along the coast at about 70 miles an hour. It passed near Naples fourteen miles north of the city, remaining about ten miles at sea, with no ships struck. Local sailors say it was a genuine waterspout, a nautical term for a cyclone aloft, a phenomenon never seen here before.
