Ada Corkhill of U S A N C Base Hospital No 51 recounts arrival at Brest Toul Ren nes Chartres Orleans Troyes and Nancy as Allied troops advance homeward. She describes evacuation of wounded Christmas plans at a hostess house with YWCA and Red Cross facilities and scenes of war’s end including a downed plane and peace sirens.
Harry Slaten of Riverside County writes from a distant post in December 1918 to his brother Cap Slaten. He describes cold weather, longing to return to the U.S. Army unit, and the shift from trenches to billets. He recounts German souvenirs, a belt buckle, spiked knuckles, and an incident of a close hand to hand fight with a German.
Attendance at local schools improved on opening day with High School 142, Lincoln 156, Washington 148. Only sixteen sent home today versus forty yesterday as influenza quarantines ease. Students with colds are barred from entering and must remain home until fully recovered.
Lieut. Jas DeHart of Mathes Field Sacramento landed at Corona aviation grounds near Smith avenue and requested Union Gasoline to refuel. He spent about two hours preparing his aircraft then departed for San Diego via Lake Elsinore and the San Mateo Cut. It is believed he spent the night in Fresno while charting air mail routes.
A local note clarifies thrift stamp use with War Savings Stamps. People wonder if 1918 stamps must fill book pages. new color coded stamps will be issued to fit different cards. Pvt. Harry Slaten of EH Co 104 Int recalls a trench melee where a man used a trench knife and apical blows on a Yank, leaving him with a sore head. He kept a knuckles piece as a priceless memento, refusing all offers. He notes his brother Allie is not seen and unlikely to return.
A Messenger from the Russian voluntary army reaches the Allies via Salonika to report that despite heavy defeats the Russians remain organized and capable of forming the nucleus of a future Russian State army. General Alexeieff and Deniakin led efforts against Bolsheviks and Germans, with Alexeieff killed in battle while Deni kin continues to lead. The expedition notes 100,000 disciplined troops needing munitions and support to resume the fight.
