Washington instructs consul Letcher to demand full protection for Spanish citizens and others in Chihuahua. Villa asked to release women and children of Spaniards fleeing to Texas amid ongoing Mexico unrest.
Wineville won the baseball game 6 to 1 over Corona on the Washington grammar school diamond. Corona’s lone run came on a Jones single driving in Shapel. Corona fielded with several Indians from Sherman Institute, while Wineville’s lineup included Hansen Black Shakeford Rice Nettle Bertlett Pierce Jim and Black.
Readings and songs from yesterday's morning and evening services featured organ preludes anthems and solos. Performances included King of Kings Keep Me Saviour There Were Shepherds Rejoice O Sons of Men and Ave Verum with choirs led by Mrs Bates Walter English and James Taylor among others.
The high school boys basketball team plans a game tonight with the George Junior Republic players, conditionally traveling by auto. Although practice has been limited for two weeks, some players have kept up individual work, and Corona hopes to repeat the Baraca victory over the Republic. School life resumes after a Christmas break as sopho mores and juniors reclaim classrooms and teachers return, except Miss McPhee replaced by Verne Hoffman. Dr. and Mrs. Griffin of Los Angeles and Attorney C. C. Davis visit Dr. and Mrs. Davis during the holiday.
Mr and Mrs Sam Baxter spent Christmas with friends in Angel City noting a quiet holiday visit.
J E Devine the new Corona city marshal spoke to a representative of The Independent on the local Mexican situation. He says there are too many blind pigs and that Mexicans and booze cannot mix, asserting a white man can drink without trouble but a Mexican cannot. He has not yet taken the oath or posted bond, but expects to within days.
An unusual sight in the business district Saturday showed a ten horse team passing through town. The spectacle was notable for the team being driven with only a “Topk” line, a rare harness detail in the street display.
Miss Leatha Raney arrived in Los Angeles this morning to resume her studies at the State Normal school.
Miss Dolly Raney and G C Raney returned to Los Angeles Sunday after attending the funeral of the late Fred Moneys held here Saturday.
Reverend J F Bromphrey of the Methodist church last night argued the murder of GG Alexander threatens the rule of law. He warned that the killing signals a challenge to public safety and demanded firm action to restore order.
Several large cities erect a huge yearly Christmas tree with carol singing on Christmas Eve. New York parks show glowing giant trees. Last year’s tree inspired this year’s plan with more cities adopting the idea including Seton, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Kansas City and Philadelphia.
The Children's Christmas festival at the Episcopal church celebrated Holy Innocents Day with carols prayer and a reading. Santa Claus failed to appear prompting a committee to fetch him from Fairyland. Fairy Queen and dwarfs aided by the mothers and teachers filled stockings with candy nets and toys to delight the children.
James Fariss father of Ralph Pariss arrives with brother Percy Fariss in Los Angeles from Bakersfield. He consults with Wheaton A Gray about habeas corpus to halt the death sentence for the Montague murder, hoping a technical error or mental incapacity may delay or commute the punishment. The condemned man’s family reacts emotionally during a visit.
Mrs. Vonbenet and Mr. Newkirk hosted a Sunday gathering at their home in Minnesota while the couple plans a southern California trip. The event occurred in the presence of friends and family.
