Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman James Lovell and William Anders report a smooth flight home from lunar orbit. The craft is set for a Pacific splashdown tomorrow morning after a final midcourse correction is canceled and re entry angles are adjusted for a safe descent.
The Apollo 8 moon shot was voted the year’s top story in a Christmas Eve AP editors poll. The assassinations of Kennedy and King moved to second and third, with Pueblo ship crew release rising in the final tally after the first poll.
Navy officials delayed the start of intensive interrogation of the 82 surviving USS Pueblo crew members until tomorrow. The crew will undergo medical examinations and debriefing over the next ten days, confined to two buildings.

Lockheed Missile and Space Co reports a 34 hour simulated deep sea mission in a 914 foot sphere as part of testing. Roger Fuller, the Navy project head, says four men ran six hour watches at work stations with advanced optical gear aboard. The craft is designed to descend to 20 000 feet as the firm evaluates results for a longer mock exploration.
Police said Dr. Richard G. Irwin, 59, a prominent University of California Asia expert, hanged himself at his home yesterday. He was associated with UC's East Asiatic Library. no note was found and friends offered no clear reason.
