In New York on December 22 traders pushed copper and oil shares higher amid expectations of a broader rise in crude prices after the new year. Trading remained light as operators awaited clearer direction on the market’s trend.
The Cuban House votes to impeach President Miguel Mariano Gomez after he vetoed the army backed sugar tax bill. Col. Fulgencio Batista sponsored the bill which funded army led rural schools. A committee will pursue charges of coercion of congress over the nine cent sugar tax law. If Gomez resigns, the Senate may act. otherwise impeachment is expected.
The Pacific Coast maritime strike remains in focus as mediators and the public watch. A tentative agreement exists between ship owners and the sailors union, but a coastwise vote on settlement is not expected soon.

Great Britain informed the United States and Japan of an intention to convert five cruisers into anti-aircraft ships. Japan and the United States had previously assented. The 20,270 ton ships will serve up to five years in peacetime use.

Lord Nuffield, noted industrialist, gives ten million dollars to assist the hungry and distressed as a gesture to the new King. He has donated about thirty five million dollars in recent years. South Wales will receive help through his generosity during a royal visit by the Duke of Windsor.
A kindergarten bus bound for school collided with a truck in San Francisco, killing one child and injuring six others. Police and emergency crews responded to the scene and transported victims to area hospitals for treatment.
The Ocean to Ocean Highway will pass through Corona via a south of Santa Fe alignment as part of United States Highway No. 6 linking Provincetown and Long Beach. The plan includes merging with Highway 18 near Corona, with Riverside County gaining its first major east coast connection.
In Ottawa on December 22 an overheated kitchen stove caused a blaze that destroyed a small two story frame home in the lower town. Five children were trapped in their beds and died. Their parents and two other children escaped.

The group announced a Legion family Christmas party at the Legion hall.
A ten man party led by Deputy Sheriff Alvin Sherwood will reach a twisted Northwest Airlines Electra wreck along Cemetery Ridge in Tate to recover the pilot Jo Livermore, co pilot A. A. Haid, and about 490 pounds of mail using a portable radio and a rescue sled.

Employees received December salaries on the 15th and the company paid the year 1996 Social Security tax without deduction. Collateral Trust Notes holders received all interest for the year before Christmas. Directors declared a dividend on common stock at the December 21 meeting to reach stockholders before Christmas.
SAN SALVADOR, Dec 22 UP Earthquakes across eight cities in the Central American republic caused about 100 deaths and 100 million dollars in damage. President Maximilian Martinez plans a reconstruction program and will seek an emergency credit to rebuild San Vicente. About 300 injured. aftershocks and wreckage may raise the death toll. Over 1000 distinct quakes were recorded by the national observatory, with the full force felt somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.
An official dispatch from Nanking reports Madame Chiang Kai-Shek wife of Generalissimo arrived at Sianfu in Shensi by airplane this afternoon to plead for Generalissimo’s immediate release. She traveled with her brother T. Vo Soong after leaving Nanking by a special airplane this morning.
Tentative plans for the Civilian Conservation Corps enrollment begin January 4 1937. A limited number of replacements will be assigned to all California counties with new educational programs added to existing vocational courses. Enrollment is optional but reports indicate 90 percent participation in one or more courses with diesel engineering aeronautics forestry typing and stenography drawing the highest registrations. Palm Springs development pressure prompts a plan for a new 80 foot right of way across Indian lands to connect with Palm Springs. The board referred the road question to the planning commission for a report next meeting as incorporation boundaries loom. It also discussed radio patrols, WPA renovations, and 11 dance permits including Palm Springs Inc. and debated making the county surveyor a full time position pending legal opinion.
Lighted signs authorized by the city council weeks ago were installed today on Harrys Shoe store and the Mel Donald Liquor store. The signs advertise the shops offerings with bright display.
Today’s report notes twenty cars of Navels and nine cars of lemons sold. Navel prices advanced with a range from 2.35 to 3.00 dollars. Lemons rose on top grades and 3800s stock held steady, with general ranges from 3.40 to 5.15 dollars.
