Venice Amusement Pier Destroyed by Fire in Ruinous Blaze

A blaze in Venice last night destroyed the S100000 Venice amusement pier after engulfing a dancing pavilion where 500 people were dancing. Firemen from Venice and two Los Angeles companies fought the flames as roof collapse sent burning timbers onto the floor. Lifeguard Charles Kirby died after being hurled from the roof while rescuers saved others.

Iowa Junior Wins International Honors for Calf Club

Harry Sladdocek of Marshall County Iowa earned the 1920 top junior calf club honor after winning the champion calf at the Iowa State Fair and his home county fair. He became International Grand Champion at Chicago earning 100 from the American Aberdeen Angus Breeders Association and 460 from the exposition. Other clubs nationwide saw Aberdeen Angus champions and high prices, with associations awarding gold watches and thousands in prizes to top calves.
