The California Motor Vehicles Department announced mass mailing of 1958 registration cards for commercial vehicles and trailers to over 1.4 million owners, with private passenger card notices set for December 26. About 7.6 million cards will be distributed, with early cardholders urged to submit both card parts with 1957 fees.
U S military scientists outline five steps to reach the moon including unmanned moon and planet landings, manned satellite flights with return to Earth, space platforms at 500 to 600 miles, a 24 hour satellite station 22 500 miles out, and a vehicle to navigate between stations for soft landings.

Sen William F Knowland announces Duck Darling as Riverside County chairman for the California gubernatorial campaign. The county committee will oversee the campaign in Riverside County. Darling, a Riverside realtor, is vice president of the California Real Estate Association and immediate past president of the Riverside Board of Realtors.
A Prudential poll of 1000 western business leaders shows 60 percent expect the first quarter of 1958 to match or exceed 1957. About 32 percent foresee 1 to 10 percent gains and 11 percent predict rises above 10 percent. Utilities are most optimistic, agriculture least, with optimism highest in Southern California-Arizona at 66 percent.

Washington reports major railroads asked the Interstate Commerce Commission for permission to file new freight rate plans showing an average increase of about 3 percent. The commission had awarded larger gains earlier and warned further increases were imminent to cover rising costs.
Alexander Nesmeyanov, head of the USSR Academy of Sciences, urged Parliament for more funding, noting 240,000 scientists and 250,000 graduates yearly. He warned against overestimating achievements and criticized outdated equipment and duplication. The 1958 science budget would total 18.2 billion rubles, a 10 percent rise.

Perry Lieberman editor of Half Parade, a 1200 gag compilation, dedicates the book to Beneficial Finance Company citing their cash as essential. The dedication notes the firm at 123 East Sixth St lent funds enabling the project and credits their liberal credit policies for its completion.
Preliminary plans for a two story Sunday school building by First Baptist Church at Eighth and Main Streets in Corona were left with Building Inspector Edgar Hollenbeck for review. Louis Gamble Associates of Long Beach prepared the plans as part of a construction contract with the church. An application for a building permit is expected in early 1958.
Actor Akim Tamiroff aged 58 and his wife Tamara 55 were injured in a two car crash near Bloomington reported by the Highway Patrol. John Van Druten 56 London born playwright novelist director and television writer died Thursday at his ranch near Thermal. Ina Ray Hutton orchestra leader reported jewelry and personal effects valued at 6684 stolen from her Northridge home. Jack Linkletter 20 son of Art Linkletter will marry Barbara May Hughes 21 a Beverly Hills High School teacher in South Pasadena on Saturday.
