The City presents to the Ministerial Association a nativity display now set on Civic Center lawn. Mayor J Harold Harris says the city lacks staff to care for it and the association will manage it after this year. Minor Martin of Riverside was among six House members who opposed minting a 50 cent piece bearing John Kennedy’s likeness as the bill passed 352 to 6 and moves to the Senate. The debate highlighted GOP objections to rapid action over a Rayburn commemorative coin, with several Republicans joining in the vote against the measure.
Jefferson Davis, 44, received life saving kidneys from chimpanzee Mangets six weeks ago and reports improved health. Doctors credit medication and X rays with enabling the transplant to work as the body’s rejection tendency diminishes. Surgical spokesman Dr. Keith Reemstma says the rejection mechanism appears overcome and Davis plans to return home today.
The City Council approved installing gates in a continuous block wall at the rear of lots in Tract 2761 to handle an uphill slope. Nine lots on the tract’s north edge would extend level to the property line, avoiding a mud wall, with gates letting homeowners access their yards for leaves burning and neatness tasks.
Washington UPI reports the machinists union canceled a strike scheduled for midnight against United Airlines and agreed to submit a new company proposal for ratification by its members.

Corona Police Department officers David Jimenez and A W Daniels were singled out by Realtor William C Haile in a commendation letter to the City Council. The letter praised their quick follow up after a burglary report leading to an arrest and recovery of stolen merchandise.
The City Council is set to pass an ordinance to ban parking on both sides of Ontario from Garrettson to Compton and on North Main from the tracks to the city limits. Police and engineering officials cite traffic hazards on the state highway and urge restrictions to maintain safe passage at highway speeds. City Attorney John Ganahl notes extending the ban to the improved portion of North Main may be warranted.
