One Coast Guardsman died and 11 others were injured when a single enormous wave washed over the cutter Gresham in the mid Pacific. Five of the wounded were in serious condition. The overboard man’s body was not recovered. Names were withheld pending kin notification.
Federal Judge William C. Math es issued a temporary order prohibiting union interference in piggy back shipping operations. Freight movement resumed today as goods travel by rail to truck-trailers and are placed on barges, removing the need for freight handlers after a blockade by a longshoremen's picket line since November 1.
Secretary Ezra Taft Benson praised California citrus growers at the Sunkist annual meeting for thriving without price supports. He noted that about 20 of 200 commodities receive supports and only five face acreage controls, warning that government aid would have undermined market self reliance.
A 20 year old Navy petty officer Delano Currington admitted he regrets not having four boys after his wife Mae Currington gave birth to three sons and a daughter. The father said they lost the game in the third quarter and all were in excellent condition at Letterman Army Hospital.
F. P. McCormack and G Manley Cole were honored at a Supervisor's Club dinner in Corona as they retire at year end after 3 and 32 years with Lemon Products Division of Sunkist Growers. McCormack, point engineer, plans travel. Cole, technical superintendent, helped guide citrus research and development.
Chicago reports progress in negotiations to avert a crippling strike against American Airlines ahead of the Christmas travel rush. An airline spokesman said prospects brightened for a settlement before the midnight Friday deadline as talks ended in the early hours and were to resume. The Air Line Pilots Association planned a 1500 pilot strike at a minute to midnight Friday in a dispute over a new contract.
In San Joaquin County Judge Robert Bainbridge ruled that indiscriminate road checks to enforce licenses violated the law. CHP Commissioner Bernard Caldwell said officers used traffic checks, not random stops, and only acted when illegal operation was suspected.
United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold departs for a Middle East mission. He plans a brief home leave and Christmas with the UN Emergency Force in the Gaza Strip, while also engaging Israeli and United Arab Republic officials on the Sea of Galilee border flare up.
A building permit was issued to Corona Lanes Inc at 1416 W. 6th St for a commercial sign with a value of 7500 dollars.
Electrical permits were issued to Mrs. W. M. Banks of 333 Lincoln Ave and Elmer Bates of 908 Grand Blvd.
