Weather report notes high cloudiness in the east with mostly cloudy conditions to the west and light rain or drizzle in the extreme northwest this afternoon. Light rain or drizzle affects the western area tonight into Friday morning, with partly cloudy skies in the east tonight and Friday. Cooler temperatures expected today.
Dr. Norman H. Mellor led a Corona Civil Defense meeting comparing good and bad civilian defense efforts. He warned of potential civilian casualties, described hospital and supply arrangements, and outlined Medical Section duties from staffing and transportation to emergency centers and mortuary services.
Mrs Hi Crandell of Corona died last night at her daughter’s Hollywood home after years of collecting elephants. Survived by son Jack Crandell and daughter Beth Pickford, she built a world-spanning menagerie of over 500 figurines from ivory to glass. Funeral Saturday at 11 a.m. Bell-Thomas Mortuary with Rev. Jones officiating.
Corona stores will remain open evenings for Christmas shoppers beginning tonight and lasting through Christmas Eve. More than a dozen stores have announced evening hours, a change not yet listed with individual names.
The city reports a high of 64 degrees today and a low of 49 degrees last night. The figures come from the official temperature record.

The Corona Soroptimists plan to donate a portable resuscitator worth about 425 dollars to Corona Hospital. Chairwoman Genevieve Reed notes the device will be wheeled for easy public emergency use, replacing the only available unit from the Fire Department.
Edmund F. Clark Jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. E F Clark of 723 West Eighth street died at Los Angeles General Hospital about 6 p.m. Tuesday December 12 from burns suffered in a flash fire two days earlier at the Angelus Sawdust Co. plant in Los Angeles. Born March 21, 1906 in St Louis he lived in Corona since 1918 and was part of Corona High's first graduating class in 1924. He worked in various firms including Blue Diamond Co Temescal Canyon Union Oil Co Corona office and California Wire Cloth Co Oakland before World War II and for two years was Southern California representative of King Sales Co San Francisco. He recently sold a large order for Exchange Lemon Products Co of Corona. He is survived by his widow Sophie Parsona Clark and three sons Edmund F III Richfield H and John F with siblings and parents. The funeral is set for Friday December 15 at 10 a.m. at St Cross Episcopal Church Hermosa Beach with interment in Inglewood Cemetery.

UN force totals run about 400,000, with over 200,000 South Korean militia. Evacuated 60,000 from Hamhung raise questions on subsequent movements. Reds outnumber UN by roughly four to one, and balance of materiel may lag. Chinese forces account for over half of enemy strength, with revitalized North Korean troops likely first to strike. In a Calabasas area incident near Van Nuys a young widow Margaret Rowney killed herself and her four children aged 3 to 7 by filling a modified station wagon with carbon monoxide. Police found no suicide note. Neighbors cited severe strain from ill health and a late husband’s death.
