City council granted Corona Foothill Lemon company permission to lay an eight inch steel pipe line about 2000 feet south of Hill street in the Main street parking area east side. E L Toolen, manager for the company, presented details of the project.
Kenneth Laws and Pete Casas were denied a writ of habeas corpus by Superior Judge O K Morton after a two day hearing. Their freedom from county jail was sought temporarily following Nov 27 convictions for disturbing the peace in Temescal justice court. Attorneys Westover and Marcus said appeals would be filed and Morton withheld formal entry to allow perfecting the appeal. They remain free on $400 cash bail.
City council authorized John A. Cubley to submit a tree survey and house numbering project to county headquarters. The project cost would be 830 dollars for labor funded by SERA and 87.50 dollars for materials paid by the city. Numbering aims to correct designations and map all lots for future reference under building inspector supervision.
In Lansing Michigan firefighters recovered eight additional bodies from the Kerns hotel ruins bringing death toll to 22 with 50 to 70 still missing. Police continued searches through the Grand River near the ruined hotel for more victims.
Temperature records fell across the midwest south and east as a severe winter storm continued. The death toll rose and crops faced threats in the south while readings ranged from five above in Boston to 25 below in northwest mountains. The city budgets $50 000 to dig out from the blizzard.

By a three to two vote the city council refused to ask the SERA to provide traffic watchmen at school crossings. Supporters cited PTA requests while opponents argued the SERA guards would lack local control and not solve the problem. Mayor Huckins and several officials opposed the plan noting no city voice in hiring and concerns about across the board aid. The board indicated the city would instead fund pedestrian signs and related safety measures at crossings.
City Attorney Walter S. Clayson said Southern Sierras Power Co. may reply with a rate reduction proposal by next Tuesday evening. Manager George T. Bigelow said the firm still studies figures and has not provided a written answer yet. Mayor Huckus urged waiting for the power company’s official reply.
The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War celebrate 49 years since founding. The local Nancy Carr tent No 49 of California and Nevada, formed June 22, 1925, honors a nurse who served the Union during the Civil War.
About 15 stockholders attended meetings for Temescal Water and Corona City Water at the local office. No major actions were taken as directors and officers were re elected and future prospects discussed. Temescal directors include Jameson Barnes Willits Davis Waterbury and Mueller with Jameson as president. Corona City Water re elected Willits Mueller and Scoville in identical roles.
The Corona-Norco school system shows an increase of nearly 160 students over last year with average daily attendance up by 143.10. Superintendent Glen D. Wight reported the rise to the board, which asked for a plan to hire additional teachers at two schools. Attendance figures list totals for High School, Junior High, Lincoln, Foothill, Jefferson, Norco, and Washington campuses.
At Dunkers club this morning doctors staged a shadow-graph operation on singer Frank Newsom amid ether fumes and groans. Medical staff diagnosed his condition as acute Nelsonia and treated him as part of a Morning alap slop event in the Alpha Beta store, drawing a large crowd.
The local Veterans of Foreign Wars meeting led by commander John E. Rogers focused on urging support for the federal bonus payment. If approved, about 200 area veterans would receive 150 dollars each totaling roughly 30 thousand dollars for the district. A 15 pound turkey was awarded to Howard Morrell. a Christmas party for members’ children is planned for Christmas Eve.

Councilman Frank Healy cites a two year conscience issue as the basis for discussion on small pay increases for city police officers. Healy proposes $10 per month raises, with others urging caution and a possible study after January 1 to assess overall finances and a potential five percent boost.
Sixteen members led by President W. B. Munn attended last night’s district meeting at Riverside to plan a Riverside club sponsored golf tournament set for January 4. County participants from Corona San Bernardino Ontario Upland Anaheim and Barstow totaled 102 along with presidents of several Riverside service clubs. Guest speaker was 2.00 Huff of the California Fruit Growers Exchange Los Angeles.
