Water continues to pour across the street as a retaining wall on the right limits further damage to a housing tract north of Ontario, while acting as a settling basin for debris and floodwaters.
Norco voters reject a 2.15 million dollar sewer bond by 53.7 percent amid rain and lower turnout. The failed measure would have funded half of a 4.3 million dollar system tied to Corona’s sewer project with hopes for a federal grant that now seems unlikely. Opposition leader Luther T. Smith vows future campaigns while noting only certain areas need sewers.

The third storm in five days drenched Corona with 4.62 inches of rain between Friday morning and eight this morning. Flooding washed out streets, toppled trees, and disrupted utilities while markets reported lower trade and residents faced leaks and long nights of repairs. No serious accidents were reported and police kept traffic moving slowly as crews worked on river flooding and a 30 foot tree near the Santa Ana River bridge.
Mopping up operations spread across Corona as public works cleared streets and utilities restored power and phones after a violent storm. Trees toppled across roads and lines, flooding blocked Ontario streets, and a large underground drain pipe failed to handle debris. Crews from Santa Fe Railway and Pacific Telephone worked through the night to reopen tracks and restore service.
The federal government will build a $20 million Veterans Administration hospital on an 18 acre Hazard Park site acquired in an exchange for 21.8 acres in Westwood. The swap, approved unanimously by the City Council, will see the Westwood land used as a city park.
University of California students returned to classrooms after a four day walkout that the leaders called suspended amid a firm administration stance. Regents authorized firing teaching assistants who remained active while TA unions led the protest.
