Two inmates laboring in Folsom Prison’s machine shop built a nine foot blade helicopter from an automobile differential and a jig to cut metal. Guard and warden investigated for two months as the improvised craft neared assembly and speculated on escape plans.
A man with a beard and pigtail boarded National Airlines Flight 64 to Miami. A stewardess asked if the flight was bound for Cuba, and he was escorted off after the mistaken identity. Brando, en route to a Colombia movie set, refused to return aboard.
Senator George Murphy of California announced to reporters at the Republican Governors Association that he will seek another term in 1970. He expressed confidence in a victory and dismissed speculation about his future after a serious health scare three years ago.
Baltimore City Comptroller Hyman Pressman says he was flabbergasted to receive a Nixon letter seeking people who can contribute to the country. He notes this is the second letter from the president-elect, with the first thanking him for campaign work. He sent a reply stating it was nothing.
Larry D. Aldridge a 25 year old Riverside man was driving home from work on Highway 91 near the East Grand Boulevard overpass when he closed his eyes for a second to ease a headache and lost control. His 1956 Volkswagen rolled over and came to rest in the center divider. He was taken by Kriffin Ambulance to Parkridge Hospital. No other vehicles or passengers were involved.

Viet Cong and North Vietnamese gunners shelled 37 allied bases and South Vietnamese towns last night and today in the heaviest attack since the November 1 halt in bombing. Military spokesmen said the strikes targeted several bases and towns across South Vietnam.

The campus tense yet orderly after a Thursday clash with police and striker attempts to storm Hayakawa’s office. Hare named acting chairman of the new department with Nathan Hare guiding the program begun last September.

A male, dressed in a woman’s clothing and wig, chased two 13 year old girls during a physical education period at Letha Raney Junior High. Police list the incident as indecent exposure and battery after the suspect grabbed one girl and forced her to the ground before escaping over a fence into an orange grove.
Customs police seized almost a ton of deer horn and a quantity of Korean wine on a boat anchored 200 yards off the coast. They said the items worth about $1.5 million were the year’s largest such seizure, believed smuggled from Communist China for Thai demand.
