Few Americans miss Social Security payments due to late claims
Social Security officials say thousands may miss benefits by not filing or filing late, but the vast majority of insured individuals receive lump sum or monthly payments. About 54 million workers contribute, with nearly 7.7 million collecting monthly checks in August 1955 and lump sums totaling around 100 million for survivors. District offices process roughly 36,000 claims weekly, while inquiries reached 154,715 in one week.

Mexican workers shot and killed at El Centro card game
Two Mexican contract workers Angel Renteria 45 and Anacleto Romero 33 were shot to death after a card game at a labor camp bunkhouse two miles east of El Centro deputies report. One man is held for questioning. Renteria survived by a wife and three children. Romero was found beside his bunk after the first shot.

Deer as witness leads to fines for out of season shooting
In Onaway Michigan three youths each paid 50 dollar fines after a deer they shot out of season survived and testified against them. Conservation officer Harley Burris and Police Chief Gordon Higgins reported following the youths’ car when a deer poked its head from the trunk.
