Authorities opened an investigation into the collision of the Western Pacific Exposition Flyer with a standing freight train 19 miles east of Portola. Two trainmen were injured slightly and more than 100 passengers were shaken up. A heavy fog contributed to the accident as the east bound flyer struck and demolished a caboose, sleeper, and empty coal car that failed to clear the main track at the Chilcoot siding.
Double funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday for Mrs Isabelle Chavez and her daughter Miss Eloize Chavez of Southern California. The rites will be at St Edward's Catholic Church with Rev Father Michael J Byrne officiating. Burial follows in Sunnyslope Cemetery. Rosary is set for 8 p.m. tomorrow. The pair died from carbon monoxide fumes in their home at 401 East Eighth Street after a gas heater malfunction. Mrs Chavez died at Riverside hospital Sunday afternoon and Miss Chavez at 6:50 a.m. today. Miss Chavez, 40, born in Ontario September 16 1901, was a longtime Corona resident and descendant of Southern California Spanish families related to Yorbas Botillers Scullys and Dominguezes. Her father, the late Marion A Chavez, was killed in a Glendale train accident in 1981. The family has lived in Corona since 1913 and Eloize attended local schools until forced to quit due to ill health.
Lawrence D. Pritchard of USC told a Public Forum audience last night that German influence in South America is waning faster than expected. He noted many Germans are not Nazis but a large number are pro-Hitler, yet cited signs of decline such as airline takeovers by Pan American and a pro American press alignment. He paused that overall Latin American opinion toward the United States remains to be seen.

A large British fleet including battleship Prince of Wales appeared off Singapore in the outer channel heading toward the naval base. The fleet led the convoy of warships as proclamations of emergency were issued in Johore and Malaya. Officials denied Manila rumors of a Japanese fleet near Guam, suggesting a lull before the storm and possible activity by friendly ships refueling in Borneo.

Funeral services planned for George Washington Kurts 27 and William Rex Johnson 14 both Norco residents. The Lutheran minister from Arlington will officiate at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The pair died in a Saturday evening auto crash near Adams street on Magnolia Avenue Riverside while en route to a birthday celebration. Kurts son of Mr and Mrs John Kurts of Second and Temescal streets. Johnson son of Mr and Mrs Rex L Johnson of 304 East Second Street.
A Thursday 4 p.m. gathering in the Chamber of Commerce office will discuss distributing Christmas baskets to avoid duplication. Attending will be representatives of several civic organizations. The meeting was called by Mrs. W. Field, Red Cross chair.
London reports the Australian cruiser Sydney, famed for battles against the Italian navy, believed fatally wounded from sinking the German raider Steinmarck. Melbourne dispatch says Parramatta torpedoed and sunk with 141 dead of 161. British naval force in the Mediterranean destroyed an Italian supply ship a tanker and a destroyer.
Harry S Payne was elected president of the Corona Chamber of Commerce for 1942 at the annual meeting and noon luncheon in the Kinney service club room. He will succeed George E Padgett with Elvin I Downs, C T Hoover, and Fred E Snedecor named to officer posts. Reports note ten Corona plants with defense production capacity and plans to list qualified firms with defense authorities. Payne to represent the chamber at a Riverside meeting forming a county organization for government savings bonds distribution.
A special fact finding board reported terms of a wage agreement to President Roosevelt ending a threatened nationwide railroad strike. After 34 hours of negotiations Board Chairman Wayne Lyman Morse announced the terms likely include a ten cent hourly raise totaling about 300 million dollars annually for roughly 1.25 million railroad workers.
