Attorney General Rules On Farm Hauling Tax Exemptions

The Attorney General issued two rulings on the new trucking tax. One holds that a farmer delivering fruit with his own trucks is not hauling for hire and is exempt from the tax, while another finds farm cooperatives hauling for members are hauling for hire and subject to the tax. The rulings stress gross receipts, not profits, and aim to curb evasion by wildcat operators. The State Board of Equalization expects $800,000 to $1,000,000 yearly from the tax.
