A group of residents predicts the Democratic nominee at next week’s convention. Many favor Hubert Humphrey citing experience and a vice presidential edge, while others suspect Eugene McCarthy reflects antiwar sentiment and strength in interviews.
Dr. Kenneth S. Pitzer resigns from Rice University to become Stanford University president starting December 1. The 54 year old former Atomic Energy Commission researcher succeeds J. E. Wallace Sterling, who will serve as lifetime chancellor after leading Stanford since 1949.
A 20 year old Corona woman Virginia Rios was booked on four charges including felony drunk driving and felony hit and run after allegedly roughing up three officers during arrest following a hit and run. Richard Ortiz 18 was injured in the crash.
Six people were treated at Corona Community Hospital after two weekend crashes as part of nine city auto accidents. Five injuries occurred in a three car crash at West Sixth and Grand when a red light was run. Victims included Gitta Buscaino and Angelica Buscaino of 604 Magnolia, Lori Nicosia, Mary Ann Nicosia, and Dora Aguilar. A separate crash near River and Country Club Lane injured Victor M. Rangel of Chino who drove off the road. Police planned to cite the red light violator.
In Houston Mary Giannaris, five, awoke hours after a heart transplant at Texas Children's Hospital and visited her parents. The Hagerstown girl is in satisfactory condition, the second child recipient ever, after surgeons transplanted the heart of a child who had suffered a brain hemorrhage. She is the world's 31st heart recipient.
Two pedestrians Ramirez and Martinez were jailed in Corona City Jail on charges of resisting arrest and felony battery against a city police officer. Martinez faces an additional charge of public intoxication.
Albion Goodwin 32 says he will cast his Democratic National Convention vote for Sen. Eugene McCarthy after conducting his own private primary in Pembroke Maine. The unofficial tally shows 207 votes for McCarthy, 57 for Humphrey, three for Kennedy, and one for George Wallace.
Postmaster Gordon Higel relayed a report from a carrier describing a Great Dane as the biggest dog seen, noting the dog’s bite history and a damaged screen porch. The carrier says owners lack control and asks where to submit the hill.
A sniper fired on a moving Long Island Rail Road train yesterday, killing one passenger and wounding another. Within minutes police captured 16 year old John Whitmore of Long Island City Queens, who allegedly fired at three LIRR trains “for the whim of it.”

At Kennedy Airport Northwest Orient Air lines suspended 14 cargo handlers for wearing long sideburns. Cargo manager George Parker ordered sideburns above the middle of the ear and gave workers until midnight Saturday to trim. Only four passed inspection. the others were sent home and appealed to the International Association of Machinists for a meeting with company representatives.
William G. Steiner executive director of Good Samaritan Boys Home reports to delegates in Blair Nebraska on expansion to a northern site near Santa Cruz. The project, costing over 500000, places Steiner in charge of Corona and Santa Cruz homes with opening targeted for October. F Thomas McNeese will run the local home during Steiner's Santa Cruz assignment.
A 17 year old Sacramento boy, Raymond Y. Espinoza, died after slipping in the San Gorgonio mountains about 20 miles southeast of San Bernardino. He worked at the Oak Glen Job Corps camp and fell after a companion was rescued following a separate fall on Saturday.
In St. Joseph Missouri a woman told city Personnel Director Clarence Vetter she is interested in both police and fire work. She said she keeps a bucket of water and a gun in each room of her house to be prepared for anything.
A violent storm brought waves up to 30 feet along Southern California beaches. Lifeguards rescued 700 people as swimmers were swept offshore. several injuries were reported but no drownings occurred. The storm’s cause had not yet been determined.
