A rambling column surveys California agriculture from Riverside peaches to Wasco rice and Hemet turkey production. It notes price drops for peaches, a growing rice and turkey industry, and local quirks as it hints at ongoing agricultural optimism and regional pride.
Lions Club members dined at the Corona Tavern in the former Hart Hotel and held a spirit communication act led by Mel Gerrard. Frank Porter performed tricks while addressing community booster work. Joseph Landon, Corona violinist, played as Mrs. Gerrard accompanied on piano.
The Riverside County district attorney will appeal a superior court ruling that set aside a restitution only sentence for EF. Leaverton, a San Bernardino refrigerator salesman, who was convicted of grand theft and had been ordered to serve time at San Quentin. The appeal targets probation reopening and the legality of the ruling, with Leaverton and new counsel J. L. Richardson involved in the proceedings.
Riverside August 8 F Trubee Davison United States assistant secretary of war visited March Field on a three hour tour after arriving from Rockwell Field. He noted the transfer of the pursuit group would depend on Randolph Field Texas completion expected January 1 and praised March Field construction progress. He was piloted by Captain Baker famed for the Question Mark endurance flight.
Mr and Mrs Larry Armstrong and daughter returned from a coastwise trip to Seattle and Padget Sound visiting friends and viewing scenic points. Armstrongs report business conditions in the northwest as similar to the nation, though not as strong as in their local section.
Arrangements set for Sunday afternoon baseball at the city park diamond with Corona facing Highgrove. Corona holds an unblemished season. battery is Boyd and Stokes with Cervantes as pitching reserve.
Corona Rotary club meets at Kinney cafe for first time since a recent fire. Members rejoice at returning to their old home with redecorated private dining room, prize gear mostly intact, except for some soot damaged badges. Artist Arthur Cane spoke on his experiences in India.
Wal lace G. Sutter secretary of the chamber of commerce says a new Motor Transit schedule will run buses directly from Corona via Placentia to Los Angeles cutting typical Riverside to L A travel from over two hours to about one hour fifty five minutes. Railroad commission hearings drew no objections and timing for the change is not yet set but expected soon.
Miss Agnes Brown of Pratt Kansas visits Corona at 806 Victoria Street staying with her brother A E Brown. She will be remembered by former Corona friends. Also visiting are Bobbie and Walter Lookabaugh, grandsons of A E Brown, and their mother Bernice Brown a former Corona girl.
Riverside August 8 attorneys from Riverside and San Bernardino counties heard Charles A. Beardsley president of the state bar association outline goals for the Pasadena convention. He proposed raising admission standards and improving justice administration while addressing unlawful practice. About fifty lawyers attended and discussed the topics.
Riverside and Colton clash on Colton’s field in a crucial American League game tonight. Riverside aims to stabilize pennant hopes. Colton seeks a win to threaten Riverside’s lead. Betts faces Duncan in a pivotal pitching duel as city league fans pack East Sixth Street arena.
Riverside reports show C S Stebbins, Hemet tax collector, receiving hundreds of dollars to stall delinquent land sales in the Hemet irrigation district. The move aims to give ranchers time to pay assessments, while a recent judge and Lake Semet Water Co case threatens the district’s dissolution and the sale of properties already advertised.
Dr. W. A. Taylor head of the U S Bureau of Plant Industry visits Riverside on his first stop here in 23 years. He praises the department’s work while touring with A D Shamel and recalls appointing G Harold Powell as first assistant. A 23 year ago Riverside meeting on fruit and vegetable transport is recalled by locals including J H Reed and F A Little. The lot notes the role of fruit transport in California markets.
Presbyterian National Missions hospitals and clinics logged patient visits exceeding one hundred thousand in the previous year, reflecting broad community care and outreach across their network.
Riverside August 7. The California Department of Public Works filed eminent domain in Riverside Superior Court to obtain nine and a half miles of Sun kist Trail between Desert Center and Hopkins Well. Sixteen parcels, up to twenty acres, are named with various old titleholders and the United States among defendants. D B Stout of the San Bernardino state highway office filed the suit. Work on the desert route will begin soon and Beaumont Redlands highway widening to 100 feet with added shoulders is advancing.
An unidentified thug choked Mrs. De H. Albert of Moody Street and robbed her purse of $7, a wrist watch, necklace and trinkets after leaping from a tree near Eleventh and Eucalyptus streets. She was left unconscious on the sidewalk and reported the attack to police.
The San Bernardino Sun reports cheering rains in parts of the Middle West with some districts seeing benefits while the drought slams others. Missouri corn and livestock losses reach about 100 million dollars, Texas cotton prospects fall short, and Oklahoma and Texas droughts persist. Water shortages force farmers to haul stock water across the Ohio Mississippi Missouri valleys and east of the Blue Ridge as Hoover and the farm board monitor the crisis.
Santa Fe updates its railway timetable effective 12:01 Sunday morning due to elimination of two Corona trains. Trains 1 and 10 discontinued. No 1 to Corona 6 10 AM, Los Angeles 7 25 AM. No 53 to Corona in afternoon, LA at 4 PM. East bound Nos 52 54 22 serve Corona with morning 10 15 AM LA to Corona 11 45, 5 20 PM LA to Corona 6 35, and 7 35 PM LA to Corona 9 05. Overland trains Scout and No 42 removed. Navajo largely replaces Scout duties. No 2 shifts to handle former local traffic.
Vernon Russell was acquitted on a charge of alleged battery before Judge W. K. Stahl after the prosecution led by George French presented witnesses Maxine Semler Aralla Northrip Avia Wayne Eleen Sembler and Lucile Bruner. Russell testified in his own defense as did Pau line Goddickson after the court heard the evidence.

Riverside August 7 a quartet of youth cyclists pursue a nonstop pedaling event now in their third start. A rider was replaced after a collision with a curb, then another resignation led Delors Sanders to join. The team includes Willard Fraker Wayne Flambee Orlie Fraker and Sanders riding two routes with one bike four hours per rider.
