County adopts building code for highways facing structures

The board of supervisors approved a new county building code banning shacks along Highway 18 and in thickly settled unincorporated areas. The ordinance, effective October 1, uses a mix of the Uniform Building Code 1952, Uniform Plumbing Code 1952, and Uniform Electrical Code 1951. It covers property facing highways and certain subdivisions, impacting about 60,000 residents in 30 unincorporated communities. Farmers and ranchers led protests against the measure.

Foresters Fight Brush Fire Near De Luz

Federal foresters maintained a line around a brush fire three miles from the Cleveland Forest boundary in the De Luz canyon area. Corona district crews, Temescal Rome Hill and San Juan guards aided, with a Corona tanker on standby. Fire began around 2 p m yesterday near the Riverside San Diego county line.

Paleontologist Identifies Nebraskas Ancient Mammoth Remains

A Nebraska paleontologist from the University of Nebraska identified remains found along the Nemaha River near here as one of the Mammoths. The scientist, Lloyd Tanner, estimates the animal lived about 35,000 years ago when Nebraska was inhabited by giant elephants.

Truman urges newspaper vote drive after first news conference

President Truman held his first news conference in five weeks and urged newspapers to campaign for voter turnout in November. He noted that in voting other countries compare favorably to the United States and commented on the Missouri Democratic primary where Stuart Symington defeated J. E. Taylor.
