Thousands of Panamanians marched in opposition to the United States taking a major portion of Tobago island for fortifications. General Pershing, visiting for an inspection, was escorted back to his hotel as American officers were ordered from a ball, while mobs pelted Panama officials.
Cordova Chamber of Commerce members plan to attend the national gathering of business leaders in Atlantic City final May. Falcon Joslin named to attend. discussion centers on boosting U S production to stabilize business and prices amid postwar shifts and wartime production losses.
A deadly Oklahoma storm tore through Peggs in Cherokee County killing fifty people and injuring about one hundred fifty. Thirty seven bodies were recovered as special trains with doctors and nurses rush to the scene and communications are disrupted.
Frank A. Munsey predicts 5 and 10 cent daily papers soon while William R. Hearst urges smaller tabloid format. Both speak before the Senate committee probing the newsprint situation.
Robert Cullen Johnstone, alias Dr. Robert E. Forbes, held over to the grand jury after a Cordova hearing on charges of stealing five blank treasury checks, forging one for $2000, and passing it at a local bank. Arrested in Utah, his federal record spans seven years with multiple aliases and prior prison terms for stolen postal money orders.
In Vancouver Washington attorney Vander Veer for the I W W was convicted in superior court on a charge of violating state law prohibiting unauthorized conversations with prisoners. The appeal followed a winter justice court decision. J J Jones of Bering River Coal Company left recently for Seattle to recover from influenza.
California towns show notable growth in the census. Long Beach, Pomona, Hoquiam, and Pittsburgh report double and triple digit gains with Pittsburgh at 588,193, Hoquiam 9,885, Pomona 21,719, and Long Beach 55,593.
Lawrence Mass May 3 Jimmy Willie defeated bantamweight New England champion Bobby Dyson in the first round.
Federal Judge Dean imposed fines of 2500 dollars each on Northwest Steel Company and Columbia River Shipbuilding Company and ordered arrest of C. R. Bowles and Alfred Smith for contempt of court for refusing to produce books for the federal grand jury investigation in Portland.
New York May 3 The federal grand jury indicted Charles W Morse for violating the Shipping Board act which bans sale of American registry ships to foreign buyers. The case centers on Morse alleged involvement in ship transfers to non citizens.
Seattle May 3 Special to the Daily Times Alaska bureau endorses new territorial legislation. Eastern capitalists will this summer begin oil field exploration in Katalla. Leases negotiated with the interior department remove royalties for five years if production stays under 100 barrels per day.
Port Warden Lathes reports March passenger movement shows 2,797 outbound Alaska travelers vs 1,987 last year while 459 returnees compare with 929 previously. Cargo value reached 1,554,782 dollars up from 768,700, signaling revival and potential for major Alaska development.

The Supreme Court recessed today without ruling on the Volstad act or the constitutional prohibition amendment. In Westerville Ohio on May 3 Associated Press reports the Anti-Saloon League led by Dr H A Baker approved presidential slate including Herbert Hoover Governor Lowden W G McAdoo Judge C E Hughes Senator Miles Poindexter and W J Bryan while considering others.
In San Francisco on May 3 the U S circuit court of appeals denied the right of the Marconi Wireless Company to collect three million dollars for patent infringement from Kilbourne & Clark Company of Seattle.
King County Democrats held two conventions selecting rival delegations to the state convention. One body backed George Harroun for national committeeman, the other backed Charles Fullen, while a dispute included Judge Rochester and other officials. In Tacoma a split over Titlow and Williams ended with Rust endorsed for national committeeman amid waitress influence.
Boston and Brooklyn battled 26 innings in a scoreless tie that set major league records. Cadort and Oscher pitched the entire marathon, delivering a brilliant game despite the 1 to 1 final.
Princeton won the varsity crew race in Cambridge with Harvard second and Pennsylvania third. In a separate event, the University of Washington beat Washington State College 77 to 54 in the dual track meet. Captain A. E. Lathrop returned from Anchorage on the Alaska and left again for that place.
