June dispatches report the second contingent of U S troops arriving in France and disembarking to eager crowds at the dock. British and French actions continue near Lens as authorities forecast further arrivals and a tense war outlook.
Interstate commission rules in Alaska trade favoring maska railroads and steamship lines. Hearing across Cordova Juneau Seattle and Washington, D.C. found no excessive wharfage or discriminatory rates, while noting contracting practices with canneries and that Kennecott Copper aided. Conclude in favor of Alaska transportation companies.
In fog off Block Island the Dewey flagship Olympia ran aground. Chief Machinists Mate William M. Babb was killed when he fell down a hatch during the incident. The tragedy marks a fatal accident aboard the cruiser during the June 27 reporting period.
Delegate Sulzer spoke in the House in favor of a harbor and river bill totaling 150,000 dollars for Nome and Yukon mouth dredging at St Michael and harbor examination. The bill passed. Butte Montana June 27 machinists boilermakers and blacksmiths at all Butte mines have gone on strike. Mines are expected to close within the next two days because blacksmiths are essential to tool maintenance.
Six Department of Justice agents are assigned to guard Judge Mayer during Emma Goldman’s trial for attempting to defeat the selective draft. The report notes the security measures surrounding the anarchist defendant.
A young woman believed to be the first to work a Northern Pacific switch engine in local yards completed her first shift shoveling coal with no ill effects. The division superintendent refused to release her name.
Mexico City June 27 exports from the Laguna district to a department of agriculture indicate a tremendously large cotton crop this year. The pink boll weevil has been exterminated in the district according to reports.
June 27 report that ten units of American woodmen sent from New England states and organizations have landed in London to convert British forests into lumber.
Honolulu June 27 The lava lake at Kilauea Hawaii has risen to within fifteen feet of the rim enabling a series of risky experiments by scientists. Using a device by Prof Jaggar they measured temperatures from the surface to twenty six feet depth. The crew climbed into the crater and lowered instruments into the boiling lava amid fumes and risk of collapse. Kilauea drives Hawaii National Park’s volcanic feature within the park system.
Washington June 25 Alaska coal fields to be opened soon for naval use. Delegate Chas A Sulzer reports the Navy expects to contract for 250000 tons yearly, pending delivery assurances. The Interior Bureau of Mines and railroad commission must guarantee capacity and terms before bunkers and wharves are built. Senators Jones and Poindexter back the effort.
The Fourth of July parade committee in Cordova invites all local children to participate. Dress white if possible and wear a red white and blue ribbon or carry a small flag. Parade forms at City Hall at 10 45 a m and moves at 1 pm with prizes for top young athletes.
Stockholm June 27 Professor G Sellergren of the Technical University asked the king to appoint a committee to study the commercial feasibility of using a Swedish peat fibre for textiles. He accompanies the petition with peat door mats he says are as durable as jute or cocoa matting and cost about two thirds to half as much as the best woven straw mats.
Sweden's population at 1916 year end reached 5,757,566, the central bureau of statistics reports. The rise of 44,826 marks a smaller percentage growth than 1915 and the lowest growth rate in many years. Births and deaths stood at 21.14 and 18.65 per thousand, the lowest on record.
A civic appeal urges all citizens and merchants to display Old Glory from the second to the fifth of July. The message emphasizes liberty freedom and justice and asks labor civil and fraternal organizations to decorate their halls. Start today and do it now.
The Right Rev R J Crimont head of the Catholic church in Alaska will be consecrated bishop of Alaska at St James cathedral Seattle on July 2. Archbishop Christie and Bishop O Dea will direct the ceremonies with other high church dignitaries and priests from across the United States. An official Vatican communication recognizing Crimont’s elevation was received recently. Also John Scott of Ketchekan was declared insane by a U S commissioner and committed to Morningside sanitarium.
