Atlanta reports a state militia unit patrolling main avenues and guarding Governor Slaton's home after 29 men were arrested trying to enter his grounds. Tensions rise as Leo Frank commutation sparks protests ahead of Harris inauguration.
Chicago June 26 In Chicago and vicinity the big carpenters strike will shut down allied trades within a week and joblessness will rise daily. Union officials foresee a long contest while supporting Chicago strikers with weekly assessments to aid out of work members. National sympathy from union men is growing as the number of unemployed in the city is estimated between 150000 and 200000.
Representatives of over 1000 American importers urged Secretary Lansing to compel Great Britain to stop blocking German ports and to allow delivery of Americans goods such as dyestuffs and potash. Lansing is weighing a formal complaint to Britain in addition to the blockade note under review.
June 26 Russian officials report continued success along the Dniester front. The six day battle persists as Austro German forces suffer defeats at Kozara and Rudzany northwest of Kaliez, while Russian lines hold firm.
June 26 reports indicate heavy German units and artillery moving from Hessen to the Trzura front west of Warsaw. Trainloads of large guns head for the Eastern line in Poland as Germany readies a large scale offensive to seize the Polish capital.
Chicago dispatch reports 23 Serbian reservists, alleged American citizens, arrested by federal authorities for suspected Neutrality Act violations as they prepared to depart for Canada with 400 others. A Reuters despatch from Petrograd reports General Soukhomlinoff has resigned as minister of war amid criticism over recent Russian military reverses. General Polovanoff, formerly assistant minister of war, is expected to succeed him.
London June 26 British aviators raided Roulers Belgium yesterday dropping many bombs on an important German supply and ammunition transfer point. One bomb hit an ammunition depot outside the city killing 50 German soldiers loading a train for the front. All airmen returned safely to their lines.
London editors debate Germanys next objective as troops mass in Argonne and along the Belgium frontier. Some predict Calais or Paris, others Warsaw, with Russian Poland troop shifts seen as aiming at Warsaw while western forces hold.
Tokyo dispatch reports Major Nakajima and Captain Hashima, two Japanese officers serving with Russian forces aiding in the defense of Lemberg, killed themselves by harakiri as the city was evacuated to Austrian and German control. Both reportedly fought to hold the town.
The Dutch steamer Ceres was struck by a floating mine near Bothnia Germany today and destroyed. The crew were saved.
In Tacoma a copper refinery after a directors conference with American Smelting & Refining Company and Tacoma Smelting & Refining Company will double capacity. The plant aims to produce about five million pounds of refined copper monthly due to rising demand. The move will require more workers and reflects increased mine production.
President Wilson signed an order to establish a timber reserve 200 miles long and up to 10 miles wide along the proposed Alaska government railroad. The move aims to bar speculators from hoarding timber while allowing settlers within the reserve to use timber on their land. A Chitina train arrived about 3 p.m.
The committee in charge altered the holiday schedule. Originally planned for July 3 and 4, the event will now take place on July 4 and 6 to align with railroad workers’ day off when a holiday falls on Sunday. Carranza announces intent to protect noncombatants while Zapata forces are said to have crushed Gonzales, prompting a strategic retreat toward Vera Cruz and mass dispatches of rolling stock to aid retreating troops.
The schooner Tyee, about 12 feet long, struck a rock at City Dock and sank into mud. Captain Jo Daniels sails from Poulsbo. repairs planned after cables cut the dock and a hull breach formed. The ship will not be floated until after the next high tide tonight.
